I recently tried to dislodge a piece of lint from my focusing screen using a rocket blower (w/o success) and now I believe I created another problem. The focusing points are now very faint especially viewing them in total darkness. What could be causing this? Could I have dislodged the focusing screen using the rocket blower?

Any suggestions?

BTW, it seems that the piece of lint is already on the top side of the focusing screen...is the screen easily removable?

If you google
300d focus screen removal

KatzEye has a PDF with instructions on how to remove it to install one of their split prism focus screens...

I would link you directly to it, however, I don't want any responsibility if you do follow it and something happens. (I'm just the messenger) :)

(Honestly, I like to tinker, but, for something this, I may just send it to Canon or a Canon authorized service center to have them look at it) :)

My main concern is if the focusing screen has something to do with the focusing point indicators through the viewfinder. If not then what could be causing the problem?

The focus screen has everything to do with the focus indicators. Its a pretty simple task to remove the focus screen and clean it out, but be VERY VERY VERY careful. Read the information from Katzeye, and I believe Hoada fu has some information out there. If it seems like more then you feel comfortable doing, give Canon a call and see what they will do about it

Update...I was able to remove the focusing screen to remove the pieces of lint. However the focusing points are still very faint. Nothing looked dislodged or anything like that.

Could the LEDs that light up the focusing points be failing?

To be honest, you might want to call Canon and ask a tech, 1-800-828-4040
number off the Canon USA website.

Sorry I cant be of more help, not a problem I had with my old 300D
