I thought I'd try my hand at a shot of the International Space Station as it went overhead about an hour ago. You kind of have to squint to make it out but it is clearly not a planet or a star. This was shot handheld using my 70-200 f/2.8 L IS with a 2x TC (@400mm) 1/250 sec., f/16, ISO 3200 (100% crop)

This one is a few years old, and not the greatest....

I like the timed shot jesko, very nice.

The ISS is not an easy thing to photograph. I think the first shot I posted is easier to appreciate when you take into account what it looked like through the viewfinder of my camera at 400mm. Here is the entire frame of the above shot, unedited other than reduced to fit into this thread. This more closely resembles what it looks like to the naked eye.

I agree, it was really just an experiment to see if I could get a shot with enough resolution to determine that it was man-made and not a celestial object. I guess in my mind, to be able to photograph something no larger than a couple of school busses from 240 miles away and still be able to make out some type of shape just amazes me.

400mm is the max I can go. I'd like to challenge someone with a 500 or 600mm lens to see what they can get. Actually what I'd love to see is a shot of the ISS with a 600mm lens with a 2x TC!

I think it's pretty cool and pretty amazing.

I'm surprised that it looks that good with all the light in the sky at Indy?
How long do you think it will be before someone suggests that you need to clean your sensor? :D

I went out to an old abandoned airport where it was pretty dark and I could see the horizon in just about every direction. That turned out to be a pretty good spot. Unless you were talking about the fact that it still wasn't completely dark. I agree. I wish it had been just a little bit later and darker.

:D I'm actually glad I cleaned my sensor and lenses before I went out to take this shot.

You over exposed it.

No serriously...

Just like taking shots of the moon you need to expose for normal daylight conditions since the station is in normal daylight.

Try the sunny 16 rule, your camera is not gonna get it right unless you fill the frame.

I bet you would have a lot more detail if it was exposed properly.
