When I opened Lightroom tonight, it said it could not locate my Library database. Fine, I went looking for it. The database was now filed in a folder called "CorruptDBs" which LR must have originated. It was not there before.

I went ahead and chose this same database to open anyway. As you will see by the screenshot attached, a few images (in more than one of my folders) do not display - yet they are still connected to the original image as the histogram displays for it as do the tag icons and exif metadata. The images not displaying are varied file types jpg, psd, CRW. I selected a "blank" image, imported it to PSE for editing and it saved back to LR with the image displaying just fine in the edited copy.

Has anyone had this experience with LR? I import by referencing my image files on my drive, wonder what would have happened had I copied them to LR...

I'm still experimenting with LR so fortunately I only have a couple hundred photos imported. I'm very glad I have my originals elsewhere and will just re-import them. Makes me kind of nervous though as I have no clue how they would have gotten corrupted already!

Any thoughts, comments?

The fact that the thumbnails are gray but the images edit ok means that it's probably just the previews which have somehow become corrupted.

One main thing to remember - even if LR's database becomes corrupted, the original images should be fine, whether you've imported or referenced. You could start a new database and reimport them, and everything will be normal.

That said, I've heard of very few database corruptions, and the team are therefore very interested in any that do happen. Dan Tull's posted his email address in this thread http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.3bc38918 (external link) and he's been able to resurrect every corrupted database so far, but the team are particularly interested in seeing any corrupt databases so that they can prevent them. Might be worth a quick email.

Interesting. I had a corrupt DB several weeks ago and posted this thread which may be of interest to everyone.

Hi Victoria,

I'll email Dan the file to take a look at as you suggest.

In the meantime I think I'll start anew with another database - if I was further along with LR I would be some upset to lose all my editing. Then again I suppose I'd have a backup in place to restore everything which I hadn't done with my experimenting images.

Enjoyed your thread In2Photos - thanks.
