My clients ordered a custom collage. They chose the photos and I designed the layout and offered them the option to have the collage printed on photo paper or on canvas - The canvas is on a wood frame, much like how you would buy a piece of art.

I am charging my client $213 CDN for the collage on canvas size 16x20
(price factors in my time creating the layout, sending proofs ect)
I have spent about 10 hours on this -it's my first one so normally I would spend no more than 2-4 hours)
(cost to me was $103 CDN for the canvas)

The canvas is not presentable for the following reasons:

1-black mark on the face
2-wood frame pressing through canvas causing notable distress to the print
3-print not centered, top/bottom is negligible but right /left is obvious

I have attached a copy of the canvas I received to get feedback on the following questions:

1- how should I approach my client when telling them it will be another. week or more... (still waiting to hear form supplier) ... because I am not satisfied with what I have received? I don't want them to assume it won't be good when I present it and I want them to feel the value of waiting.

(It has been 2 months all together including back and forth proofs and color changes ect-not all the time spent has been due to errors, mostly the planning and searching for a supplier) In total they have waited about 3 weeks extra due to errors buy suppliers...another story for another day! NEVER get prints form WALMART...it was just for me to see the layout up close, not for the client, I swear!!!

2- How much would you have charged for the same thing in perfect condition?

3- Where are you getting your canvas orders from (if you do them)

My order was from Art -Hammer. They are in California and offer a satisfaction guarantee so I will let you know what happens.

Anyone else use them and have good/bad experience?

There are quite a few places to get nice canvas from... try Simply Canvas, Canvas on Demand, or Millers.

For the client, I'd tell them that we "ordered their print from a new vendor and were disappointed to learn that it didn't meet our quality expectations... We only present gorgeous, heirloom quality, prints. I'll reorder from someone that we know and trust, and expedite the order - we should have it in your hands a week from today." Or something to that effect.

As for price, we'd charge A LOT more. You have your markup at around $100. You already have how many hours in this? You're in the better off flipping burgers range for what you're making. :)

I hate when that happens...saying that your vendor made a mistake is a good idea, but I always feel like the client thinks I'm making it up. Bus honestly, it's the best you can do. I use Simply Canvas...they've been around a while and work only with Photographers. I've always been very happy with my canvases and they really do nice work.
