They use the metric system there and I want to know if my lenses will work without a converter. Will my flash work on European batteries? Is the dust different? How many legs does a European tripod have? Do I walk on the left side in the UK? ;)

I will be photographing the usual touristy things over three weeks, starting in N.Wales, plus the Brittish GP at Silverstone and two stages of the Tour de France in the French Alps.

My camera backpack weighs 30 pounds. :( (ouch) I'm not leaving much of my gear at home. Departing Wednessday.

Canon G1X II, 1D MKIV, 5DSR, 5DIV, 5D MKII, 16-35/2.8L II, 24-70/2.8L II, 70-200/2.8L IS II, IS, 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS II, 500/4 L IS II, 24-105/4 IS, 50/2.5 macro, 1.4x MKII, 1.4X MKIII, 2X MKIII,580EX II, 550EXs(2), ST-E2.
Gitzo 1228, 1275, 1558, Lensbaby 3G. Epson 3880, Bags that match my shoes.:)

In the UK we try very hard NOT to use the metric system, we still buy beer in pints and travel in miles.

Your lenses will only work if they are L's

Our batteries are much better than yours and therefore your flash will be much brighter, which is a good thing at the moment because the weather here is cr*p.

We don't have dust, it's too damp

'Euro tripods' have yet to be decided on, they are currently deciding this in Brussels - Tony/Gordon Blair/Brown is in the middle of trying to sort this out for us (thanks Tony/Gordon)

In England you walk in the shelter of the buildings to try and keep dry.

Enjoy your trip :-)

Tapeman.....one bit of advice not given so far is to bring a couple of good Extenders.
Given that everything in the US is MUCH bigger than over here, you'll probably need to lengthen all your lenses to get the same framing that you're used too. A 1.4x might be enough but I would grab a 2x to avoid frustration.

Bob, you forget 1 thing: everything is much closer, so that negates using an extender :) ROFL

Kind regards, Wim

Depends really... If it's portraits he's going for, you're right. That 10-22mm simply doesn't work very well over here ;)

plus the Brittish GP at Silverstone

Access with a camera is not great at Silverstone. Lots of tall fences and a long way to the track most places. Do you have tickets putting you in a particular position.

Just don't use your flash. Fire detection system doesn't like it.

All the best

Sitting at the "Bridge" for the race, will wander around durimg practice and qualifying.
I'm following the packing rule: "Bring half of the clothes and 4 times the money."
