I love Zion.

The only thing I noticed shooting there was that it was very hard to add a sense of size, or perspective, to the cliffs and mountains there. Granted, I didn't have my 10-20 at the time, so I was shooting 17MM on a crop body.. but anyway.

Gorgeous place, can't wait to go back - we're going to hike the narrows this fall hopefully.

The enormity of Zion never fails to amaze me. We go to Zion almost every weekend and are constantly stunned by the almost surreal look of the walls and the blue of the sky.

Very well done, thanks.

nice shots man
Zion is so hard to shoot... it's so grand that pictures barely ever do it any justice.
I mean I tried... http://www.pbase.com/arengh/zion (external link) but I was overwhelmed.

Thanks, but it looks like you have some pretty good shots yourself. :D

Thanks.

Did you hike the Narrows... or for that matter, any of the trails?

Unfortunately, no. I had to catch a flight out of Vegas that evening so I didn't have a lot of time to spend in the park.

You've captured the frustration I felt when shooting at Zion. You feel like you're always too close and as a result you're always shooting upwards. This is unlike the other national parks in that part of the country were you can easily capture large parts of the landscape, or zoom into points of interest.

I like the colours but they could have done with a few clouds to break up the sky a bit.

If you used the 17-40, underexposing by 1/3 seems to work quite well most of the time for me and it has worked well here.

Those are beautiful. The sky was very blue for you. When I went years ago, the rolls of film I brought were all damaged. Every shot, no matter what setting I used was over exposed. I felt terrible when I developed the rolls. I am determined to go to Zions again in the next 2 years because it really is amazingly left untouched and beautiful.

I have not tried shooting zion (but want to) but am continually frustrated in attempting to capture the mountain landscapes here in Colorado. It's very challenging to get a photo that represents the feel, the expanse of the majesty that you see with your eyes (and your other senses). I guess that's why we keep trying though. :)

So many of the truly magnificent vistas don't translate well into picures, Grand Canyon springs to mind too... I guess that's what sets the likes of Ansel apart from the rest of us.

Yosemite, one of Ansel Adams' more famous subjects, is a lot more photogenic than the likes of Zion and Grand Canyon though.
