What is the highest serial number anyone has seen on the original 1D Mark I. I would like to get a rough idea of how many 1D's were manufactured.

I didn't think to write Canon, but the highest 1D serial number I heard was 297xx.. I had a person write me to say they thought Canon likely ceased production of the original 1D at 29,999 units.

I don't think Canon produced the same X number of units per month over the production run of the original 1D. I think the largest number of units were produced during the first 12-15 months of the run. The original 1D made its debut in December 2001. You know Canon had to have produced quite a few units before December 2001 in order to meet pre-orders. The original 1D production probably tapered off quite a bit from late 2003 to early 2004 before the 1D Mark II was released to the public in April 2004. The Classic 1D that I bought has serial #26xxx... The date code inside the battery compartment reads OR0618, which indicates the body was assembled at the Oita facility in June (06) of 2003 (R). The final two digits--18--probably refers to the assembly line that produced the camera. It's probably logical to think the production of the Classic 1D probably ended in December 2003. At which time Canon retooled its assembly lines in order to produce 1D Mark II's to meet orders submitted before the April 2004 release.
