powershot s60 or s500???

can you guys help me decide which camera is better?
of course im looking for the better quality one

i know s60 isnt out yet but help me out judging by the features of both, thanks

and btw whats the basic diff between the 2 s series like s60/50 and s410/500...besides body

For starters, the S60 is larger than the S410/500 series. The smaller one will fit in your pocket, the larger will not.

Beyond that, probably the biggest difference is that the S60 (assuming it's like its predecessors) can shoot RAW, which the S410/500s cannot. The smaller cameras are closest to the definition of "point and shoot".

You get more control over exposure with the S60, as you have aperture, shutter and manual modes. If you like wide angle (I do) the S60 gives you 28mm (equivalent in 35mm), which is hard to find anywhere else. The S60 is now available at B&H Photo/Video:

I'd go with the S60 because it gives you more room to grow into your photographic abilities. But that is if you are interested. If you want have more of a point-and-shoot experience, then the S500 is a capable performer.

On the other side of the fence - I like my S500 a lot as its portablity works really well for what I do with the camera. I often have the camera with me to take the shot - less likely the bigger the camera gets. I'm not trying to get much done in the artsy modes however - mostly I'm recording what needs recording and for that a point & shoot is just fine. It does take great pictures, btw. Glad I went with the 500 over the 410 or 400. It really is a matter of what you will use the camera for, the majority of the time.

Always remember that the best camera in the world is the one you have with you when you see that incredible photo oppurtunity.

I don't have an S500, but I do have an S400. I've had it since May 03 and it'ds the dogs nads. Small enough to carry anywhere 24/7 and good enough image quality to print at A3 on the right shot. I took 2000 in tenerife last year and didn't bin many. Just buy one and use it.

Full control is a NikonD 70 - loads of dosh and like transporting a brick about.

Oh! Bloody expensive too.

All the above is good advice. I've had an S50 and have handled the S400 and I know someone who has the latter and is thrilled to bits with it.

The difference in weight and size is quite significant especially if you're going to have a case and carry an extra battery. If I had the S400 I might carry it round all the time as I do my cellphone, not so the S60 (I don't have a handbag).

The extra weight of the S60 means you're less likely to get camera shake on slow shutter speeds but unless you really want to get into control over aperture/shutter etc the S500 might be your choice. The S60 is a camera, the S500 is a lifestyle statement. It's really 'cool' man.
