On page 62 of Martin Evenings Lightroom Book, he explains how to create a new folder/subfolder and drag selected images into it from another folder. It's done from the Folder Panel within the Library Module.

Seems easy enough yet after two hours of experimenting I cannot get it done! I notice that his diagram of the New Folder Dialogue Box is very different from what pops up for me. I don't see any dragging capability and all I get on creating a new folder is that there are no images to import so it won't create the new folder. (I can accomplish moving the images on the system side of things but it's cumbersome as compared to being able to do it right in Lightroom)

Has anyone actually accomplished this in LR?
Since Martin's book is so new, could it be that he has included descriptions of functions coming with the LR 1.1 upgrade, and therefore not possible in the current version? If not, what is it that I'm not getting from the instruction?

Is there a practical Lightroom Forum that anyone could recommend?

Thanks!!

Just select the images you want to drag from the thumbnails area. Drop 'em on the name of the folder on the left side.

To actually create a folder, right click on the top level folder you want the new folder to be in, select "New Folder" then proceed as normal.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Martin's book only includes 1.0 functions. There should be an update soon.

Make sure you're in Folder view while you're trying to move images, and pick up them by the image itself, not by the border round the edge. Then you should be able to pick up and drag and drop.

There is a trick here.. which took me a while to sort out.

You have to grab within the image itself in the grid view... If you grab the image 'frame' it doesn't work.

EDIT.. sorry Victoria, should have read your post first ;)

This part makes no sense. Creating a folder should have NOTHING to do with Importing (unless of course you create a new folder upon which to Import from the Import Dialog).

To create a new folder you should be doing the following:

Go to the Library module by pressing G for grid view.
In the Left Panel open up the Folders Section.
Click on the plus sign that is next to the word Folders in the panel.
When the new window comes up select the folder where you would lke to create the new folder and click on the Make New Folder button. Change the name of the folder and click OK.
LR should now create the folder and move you to that folder (even though this shouldn't happen, it should leave you in the other folder but I digress). So click on the folder with the images you would like to move.
CTRL click the files you wish to move.
Click on one of the images, NOT the border of the image and drag to the new folder you just created.

And this is the forum to use for LR help, BTW. ;)

That's exactly what I was doing wrong - works like a charm now... duh!

Creating the folders ok now as well.
(I was highlighting the main folder in the Folders view but not re-highlighting it in the pop-up dialogue, since it already appeared lightly highlited. The result of that is the "Warning-no photos to import")

So nice when you know what you are doing - thanks everybody! :)

And this is the forum to use for LR help, BTW

Very happy to hear that cause it's here I'd rather stay.... just concerned my LR questions might not be considered appropriate.

Glad you got it sorted. And about this last part, Lightroom is a highly discussed program here. In fact there is even a sticky with links to recent threads that might be of interest. :) How cool is that?
