So I have an i9900 which prints very nice. It has a feature a that is supposed to warn you when the ink is getting low then out. Mine have never worked.

I re-installed the driver but still nothing. I contact Canon via Email.. here's the exchange.... it's totally pathetic.

Me:
Ink Monitor always has shown half full . It has never given a
warning of low ink or out of ink even though it has. Using Intel
WinXP/2000 driver on AMD system. PC networked to Win 2k machine.
Monitor does not work on either PC.

Them:
Regrettably, Canon does not support this printer being connected to a
network. Please plug the printer directly into the computer, that is
being used and see if the monitor displays the proper information.

Me:
It is plugged directly into a computer. I have sharing enabled. The only reason I mentioned it was because of the driver installed. Please research further.

Them:
Thank you for replying to Canon product support. I am sorry to hear
that the i9900 is not detecting the ink correctly.

Make sure you are using Canon recommended ink.

Me:
I am using Canon ink and have never used anything else.

Them:
Having reviewed the message history, we have exhausted the recommended
troubleshooting. I recommend contacting live technical support at this
point. While I understand email may be the preferred method, the real
time feedback of a live technical support call would be very beneficial
in this case. Please see the special priority information and toll-free
number provided in the footer or signature of the message. A Canon
technical support representative will be able to better isolate and get
you up and working faster.

Anyone here have a solution?

Not yet. I just got their last Email today (at work). I just thought it was funny that "use canon ink" and "we do not support networked printers" was their "exhaustive" online support.

If you call and the printer is out of warranty they may want charge a fee for any troubleshooting advice over the phone. At least this was what happened when I called about a Canon 9950F flatbed scanner that is acting up on me. They did however give me the address of a repair facilities I could bring it to - about a 3.5 hour round trip. Fortunately the problem is one I can live with so far, randomly turns itself on and off with the power switch button "OFF", so I leave unplugged until I use it. Maybe one of the only times I sort wished I had bought an extended warranty.

Can you get to the i9900 Preference screens as shown below to make sure the warnings are enabled? If you click on the "Options" in the box "Canon i9900 - USB001" you can select how the warnings function.
