Hi everyone,

I'm new here. First of all, I would like to say that this really is a nice community! I've been to many forums but this has the best atmosphere.

Okay, here's the question. I decided to make the big move -- purchasing my first DSLR (have been using film SLRs for a few years). And I live in Canada, where things are much more expensive than what's in the states. Since I'm going to Las Vegas for vacation later this month, I want to buy an XTi there. All the store I can find online are part of the Ritz. They don't have good ratings and the price is a lot higher (799 body only while many others are selling it for mid to high 600's). So could someone please tell me a good shop with a more competitive price that I can trust? (better be close to the hotels...but not necessary)

Thanks in advance for the help! :)

Have you considered purchasing the camera online from a reputable place and having it delivered to your hotel? I know all the local camera shops around here are outrageously priced compared to online stores.

yes, order from b&h and check with your hotel to get their address. i stayed @ NY NY and they had no problem when I did it.

also, about 2 blocks north (i think) of NY NY, there's a canon shop.

thanks for the suggestions. but i'm going on 27th, and i won't know my hotel room number until i check in. and i will only stay there for 3 days. so if i buy it online, there is a risk that somehow i couldn't get it in those 3 days and i can't imagine what will happen...

i'm willing to pay a higher than online-shopping price, even at 799, since that's still cheaper than what costs here. anywhere i can go?

check that canon shop dude, you might find your camera there. If not, take a cab to fry's electronics. they have a pretty good selection of gear.

Walking rite on the strip, I think before margaritaville there is a shop. there is also one right beside the store that sells all the corona wear (right beside the giant coke bottle). Sorry the description is crappy but you will know what I mean once you get there, I promise. lol.

I personally would not buy from them just because I assume that there prices are adjusted for tourists. Though prices may be the same. You may just be better off ordering through b&H

Most hotels will hold your package at the front desk as long as it arrives the same day you are checking in. I've had many SEMA conferences there where I've had last minute promotional stuff sent to my hotel and held there until I went to pick it up.

Most big hotels there will do this as part of their service since there are SO MANY conventions there all year round.

Local stores would be Casey's Camera located just east of the Strip or Sahara Camera.

Retail chain electronics stores would be Fry's or Best Buy which are both $799 for the body only.

thanks guys! i called Casey's Carema, and not only they are selling it for 800, it's out of stock. i really want to go with b&h, but after thinking about this for a while, i decide not to. i will either buy it from a store in Las Vegas or i will just wait till i come back and then order it online. too bad i may miss the shots in Vegas...

If you order from B&H and have it overnighted to you, it still might save you some money....

IB///M, if it is important to you, make sure that, if you do purchase it in the US, that the warranty is still valid in Canada (just in case). Granted the warranty is not very long, but I have heard, but never needed to validate it, that some types of photographic equipment purchased in the US do not carry a valid Canadian warranty. I would check with Canon Canada before you go to Vegas, just to be safe, as I said, if this is important to you.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

This can be a crap shoot because some hotels do it for free, and some don't. I had a package come in once and they charged me some crazy handling fee for holding the package. I'd call the hotel ahead of time and ask them their policy. If they don't charge, then it's cool. They will hold the package for you even before you get there.

I'd head into a pawn shop and look around! I understand you can get some good deals if you look around. :-D

thanks for all the suggestions! :)

ritz was having a sale for xti with the kit lens during the time i'm in Las Vegas, and the price was actually very close to the b&h price. since i had a lot of bad experiences with UPS and Fedex (may be because i live in an apartment that needs a buzz # to get in), i decided to buy it in person.

i got the camera with the kit lens, a 4 GB 133X CF card, and a small bag that will just fit the xti with a small lens on it. and this is going to be my travel set up for now. over all, i'm very happy with everything. there is a small problem with the camera that i will ask in another thread later.

here's some pics i got so far:
