I have about 500 dollars to spend, I'm looking from something with a fast f stop and Im also willing to buy something used for about 500. I would really like something wide maybe around 17mm and I dont need a lot of zoom
I looked at the 17-85mm and Ive also looked at the 17-40mm L lens
anyone have anything to say about either lens, or have any further suggestions

oh and I will be using the 300d with the lens

thanks alot

Sigma 17-70. Fantastic piece of glass. The Tamron 17-50/2.8 is excellent as well.

The Tamron lens gets my vote as well. I opted for the 17-55IS because I shoot for pay, but I considered the Tamron at one point.

I've heard good things about the 18-50, it's also a pseudo-macro lens. It's an EX, which is Sigma's "L" designation, so the build quality should be very good. That said, the 17-70 is no plastic piece of junk - it's metal, and feels very solid.

The 17-85 gets mixed reviews on this forum. The 17-40L is built very well, has good saturation and fast focus. But many people, myself included, have had copies soft wide open. It's not until f/5.6 or f/8 that you get sharp images - and that's too slow for a walk-around.

For $500, you'd be better off getting the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 macro, or Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Look at the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. You can't go wrong for the price.

My vote would be for the Sigma 24/28-70 ex, either one. I had the Tamron 17-50 and thought it was too short and felt a bit cheap, pictures were great though. I like the solid feel and some of the features on the sigma ex lenses. The 28-70 EX is great, and the 17-70 would be my next choice.
