Then set your standard previews as your cameras sensor size in the LR Preferences and upon Import check the box that says "Render Standard Previews".

????
i think the standard preview is linked to the monitor resolution & not for sensor size!
i guess but not sure

maybe Victoria could confirm

I missed that part of your post the first time I read it.

I think LR should attempt to do that automatically when it comes across images too large, then do as I said in my post above... just not allow you to use LR's tools, but still let you open in in PS. Alot better than ignoring an image.

Or if it can't do the conversion to smaller jpg, have it crop the extra pixels off for its previews, and give a special flag to those types of images saying the actual image can only be edited in an external application.

That could be a very interesting idea David!

How could it do all this if it can't work on files larger than 10,000 pixels? If it was able to auto generate the thumbs or crop off extra pixels wouldn't it just as well be able to edit the photos directly?

Correct. I wouldn't recommend setting your standard previews too big, because it's larger files to load into memory each time. We may one day see a 'render 1:1 previews' checkbox in the import dialog, but for now, render standard on import, then select all and use Library menu > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews and go make a drink while it works.

That's one for the engineers to figure out, but I'd be inclined to say they may be able to use embedded previews/thumbnails. The 10,000 pixel limit is down to the ACR engine, which also only allows up to 10,000 pixels currently. Still, we will see!

Well, I did my update at lunch today and it seemed to go off without a hitch. I played around a bit too and here is what I liked so far:

- Seems faster.
- Folders for presets. Oh yeah, no more 100 preset list to go through.
- Clarity Slider - Where have you been all my life?
- Sharpening - Who needs PS, this thing rocks.
- Noise Reduction actual did something. :)
- New Quick develop looks awesome and easier to read.

Can't wait to play around some more.

Thanks Robert , It looks promising after I get the hang of it .

If you bought Scott Kelbys LR book he is doing a free PDF that can be downloaded soon .

''just finished writing a special free Version 1.1 PDF update for people who’ve bought my book “The Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers” and we’re working on having it up live by tomorrow. I call this update “My Lightroom 1.1 Update Kit” and the kit is laid out in two page spreads; the left page shows how we used to do a particular task in the original Lightroom 1.0, and the right page shows the new and improved way to do it in version 1.1. It’s a really clean, quick, and efficient way to get up-to-speed fast, and the initial feedback on it has been really terrific. Also, I threw in lots of cool little tips because…well, I just love cool little tips. More on this when it goes live tomorrow. ''

Don

An update to Kelby's book update:

My editor’s are just finishing up proofing the last parts of my Lightroom 1.1 Update Kit and we plan to have posted later today, so please check back for a link on where to download it. I’ll do a separate post then it goes live.

I just knew someone was going to say that. I have been using local contrast USM for quite some time now, but to have it in LR is just friggin' awesome. :)

I concur. The ACR 4.1 capabilities of LR 1.1 will make me think of it as a way to quick process smaller shoot of mine.

Adobe creates such a love/hate feel. Since loading 1.1 I have had great success - but mostly crashing...and I am not to the love hate part yet. To understand why the software stops responding, I have been searching the Adobe web site for help. Terrible.

Maybe one of you can give me a clue. I run a 3mb 3 month old dell with XP service pack 2. Everything opens perfect and my library from ver. 1.0 is there, etc. Everything works well navigating in the "black areas". When I go to the pale gray row with labels of "file, edit, library, photo, metadata, view, window, help" the problem begins. Instead of seeing the dropdown, I get a blue band across the top banner and the hourglass. If I hit control, alt. del. I am told lightroom is not responding. end of sad story.
Since it freezes at this point, I can't even go to the help pull down to go to Adobe site with the software. Any ideas on what I need to do? I guess I can reload my 1.0 disc?????

If I right click while in "develop" I can do many things including open in cs2, but...this is a crutch solution so I would like to get this fixed.

I'm sure you're running more than a 3MB machine if it's only 3 months old unless you got it from their discontinued (and discarded) stack.

In any case, it doesn't sound off the top like a hardware issue. I would try backing up my library somewhere, uninstalling LR 1.1, and reinstalling. You might also grab the backup of your 1.0 library and tuck it away for safekeeping until you resolve this issue. But, it really just sounds like a bad install.

Rick,
sorry, let's call it 3 gig. I didn't think of running an uninstall on 1.1. I will give that a try.
Thanks
