Your right. I spent 4 hours fully testing it last night. 1.1 is noticeably slower when rendering CR2 file edits. The good news is that it is much faster than 1.0 with DNG files and the program itself runs much faster at least it does on my machine. Overall it is a stellar upgrade.

Well, I use DNG so what gives?

OK, I see what you mean.. but auto hide frustrates the hell out of me... ;) I use it for the filmstrip sometimes but that's all.

There are also autohide options which remain a bit hidden - right click on the bar to see them.

I experimented with the preview quality option set to High for a while. The previews were huge (I have 1680 pixels selected because I have a 1680 x 1050 panel, and I don't want Lightroom generating 1:1 previews unnecessarily) and Lightroom got quite sluggish.

In the end, I changed the setting back to Medium, quit Lightroom, deleted the preview folder, restarted Lightroom and rebuilt all my standard previews. The previews finished up taking less than a quarter of the disk space (1.4GBytes rather than 6.2GBytes - in both cases I'd discarded all the 1:1 previews). Lightroom feels a fair bit snappier as well - though maybe that is a placebo effect!

Does the lozenge that comes up say Working... or Loading...?

If it says Working... it's having to create a preview.
If it says Loading... it's having to load the preview from the disc cache, so things like disc speed can have an effect.

Either way, obviously the larger the image, the longer the 1:1 will take to load, although it only loads fully the part you are currently viewing on screen.

David - Your preview size setting has nothing to do with your 1:1 previews, just your standard size previews. 1:1 previews are generated automatically when you access a folder, at least in v1.0 and I haven't seen anything that says that changed for v1.1.

Might be a stupid question, but how would I go about getting Lightroom to generate 1:1 previews for all my library?

I set to medium. By all means try the low quality and see what you think. The difference will be in the visible quality of the preview.

Does anyone know if it's possible to see EC values in Lightroom. It doesn't seem to be in the EXIF data, but we know it's there because programs like Canon's DPP and Apple's Aperture display EC compensation values. Am I just missing it?

NEVER MIND: I found it in view options.

I'm not really sure if there's an explicit command to do this. However, Martin Evening says in his book that when you launch LR, it automatically checks the library to see which ones you need to have rebuilt. If you set the preference to Never Discard the 1:1 previews, perhaps it will rebuild them. If not, you might have to revisit each folder first to get them to generate.

Actually, since I was never too concerned with 1:1 previews (figuring they'd be built as needed), I never bothered to look. Under Library/Previews there is an explicit command to build the 1:1 previews. If you go to All Photographs in your library and select this command it looks like it will build them for your whole library. They do take a whole lot of space though.
