Ahhh, I think I disagree. I feel strongly that Canon got & is still getting exactly what they wanted with the 300D. Sorry to Cross-post, but....from another forum....

...do we really believe that all of this is a surprise to Canon? Surely, Canon knew that this was a VERY good possibility. We were talking about it before the 300D was even released! Do we really believe that no one in all of the developing, engineering and marketing staff at Canon brought this up prior to the 300D's production? Come on, Canon knew this could happen and didn't care and/or didn't see it as a potential problem. They looked deeper and saw the potential benefits. They got EXACTLY what they wanted with the DREB:

1. Canon attracted a whole new group of consumers who now have a Canon camera (perhaps now with alot of the same features as the 10D)...who are now looking at buying Canon lenses! I would be included in this group. I sold my AE-1 and made the move to digital because of the 300D. I would have stayed with my AE-1 probably until the D70 came out and then I would have been a Nikon owner. Canon used the same/similar firmware to the 10D and hurried to get this thing on the market. I also recently spent $600 on the 70-200f4L which I also would have never done without the DREB.

2. Look at all these people who are talking about Canon. Every time we type the word, "Canon" Canon is loving it! Right Canon?

3. People with the Hacked CANON 300D now feel like a kid at Christmas and are happy. Canon surely must like it when owners of a Canon camera are happy! :)

4. These happy & somewhat 'high' consumers with the hacked DREB are perhaps now feeling like they can go get a new lens and stop worrying about upgrading to the 10D. Surely, Canon will make more by allowing people to keep their bodies and buy lenses than have to keep upgrading bodies and put off buying lenses. Then once people have 2-3 or a whole collection of EF lenses, they are probably going to be Canon consumers for life. They aren't likely in my opinion to sell it all and switch to another brand of camera. The people who still need/want the additional features of the 10D are still going to buy it (unless Wasia can send me hardware hacks!)

5. I'm going outside now to shoot with my DREB and new lens. No doubt, my neighbors/friends will see me and we will talk photography. Again, more word of mouth and free advertising with this Canon camera hanging from my neck. Canon got exactly what they wanted and will continue to get want they intended by releasing the 300D for a long time to come.

I think you're right about Canon's choice of action now though, whether or not they knew this would happen. They are now choosing to ignore it, at least for the time being, and I believe that to be due to the reasoning above also.

Chances are the people who attempt to hack to the rebel are esthusiaist ( I cant spell ), and not using their rebel for profit and such, I'm pretty sure that canon is confident, that if a professional for profit purpose, desire the features of the 10D as provided by canon they will by the 10D. While the rest of us have received the rebel as we were on tight budgets, and slowly making it through with lens, the other nice thing, is the hack invites those who were considering the rebel to have yet another reason to get one. Either way it invites people to canon's line of product, the other thing to consider is of all the people who have hacked their rebel, what is the % of that out of the entire masses that owns the rebel, also most people who are not technologically knowledged ( canon's primary target I assume with the rebel ) are going to be rather queezy about installing a firmware other than canon's very own, or a new firmware period. I guess that is one way to look at it.

IN the C.Fn -13 it refers to the ASSIST button which of corse does not exist on the 300d.

Does anyone know if it assinged it to another button so that the functions can be used, or is it a dead function.

Thanks

the 10d manual has the best explaination but here is a little info.

PA-1 Once you lock the foucus (half press the shutter button)on a subject it will not change, even if the subject moves or you recompose your shot.

PA-2 If you get a focus lock on a moving object and either you move or the subject does the focus will automaticly adjust within the seven points of focus. This is good for taking action shots.

PA 3 the camera decides what is the best method to use.

Question about installing

I've finally decided to get the hack as it seems that no one is having any problems with it. I can't wait to have the MLU.

I've downloaded the firmware and have read Canon's instructions for installing firmware, but it doesn't seem to be working. Canon's instructions simply say to put the firmware on a formatted CF, put it in the camera, turn it on, and then the menu for firmware update should appear. This doesn't happen. I can't find any menu settings either for installing it. I've checked and I have downloaded the entire 1.77mb file. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unpack it first :)
Probably you put the file downloaded directly. It`s a compressed one with the firmware itself inside. Just uncompress it with WinRAR and then copy the resulting .fir file in the CF root directory.

Really Dumb Question...

If this hack works and provides funtions that do not exist normally. What happens if you try to load a firmware update for the 10D. Will it foul everything up? Work but only for the hardware functions the 300D has? Just curious as I ponder the options and the current hack. Thanks for listening / reading.

Never tried but I think it will fail in 2 fronts:

First, probably firmware loader isn't so stupid to not to check if the firmware and camera match :)
Second, button layout and LCD displays are different, so even if it loads, probably half of the functions will fail because the lack of the button.

Just my 2 cents...

As long as it's been brought up, is anyone aware of any complaints or problems with the hack yet? It seems pretty quiet along that line to me.

Does the FEC functon only work with the external flash, or does it work on the built in?
