Ahhh, I think I disagree. I feel strongly that Canon got & is still getting exactly what they wanted with the 300D. Sorry to Cross-post, but....from another forum....
...do we really believe that all of this is a surprise to Canon? Surely, Canon knew that this was a VERY good possibility. We were talking about it before the 300D was even released! Do we really believe that no one in all of the developing, engineering and marketing staff at Canon brought this up prior to the 300D's production? Come on, Canon knew this could happen and didn't care and/or didn't see it as a potential problem. They looked deeper and saw the potential benefits. They got EXACTLY what they wanted with the DREB:
1. Canon attracted a whole new group of consumers who now have a Canon camera (perhaps now with alot of the same features as the 10D)...who are now looking at buying Canon lenses! I would be included in this group. I sold my AE-1 and made the move to digital because of the 300D. I would have stayed with my AE-1 probably until the D70 came out and then I would have been a Nikon owner. Canon used the same/similar firmware to the 10D and hurried to get this thing on the market. I also recently spent $600 on the 70-200f4L which I also would have never done without the DREB.
2. Look at all these people who are talking about Canon. Every time we type the word, "Canon" Canon is loving it! Right Canon?
3. People with the Hacked CANON 300D now feel like a kid at Christmas and are happy. Canon surely must like it when owners of a Canon camera are happy!
4. These happy & somewhat 'high' consumers with the hacked DREB are perhaps now feeling like they can go get a new lens and stop worrying about upgrading to the 10D. Surely, Canon will make more by allowing people to keep their bodies and buy lenses than have to keep upgrading bodies and put off buying lenses. Then once people have 2-3 or a whole collection of EF lenses, they are probably going to be Canon consumers for life. They aren't likely in my opinion to sell it all and switch to another brand of camera. The people who still need/want the additional features of the 10D are still going to buy it (unless Wasia can send me hardware hacks!)
5. I'm going outside now to shoot with my DREB and new lens. No doubt, my neighbors/friends will see me and we will talk photography. Again, more word of mouth and free advertising with this Canon camera hanging from my neck. Canon got exactly what they wanted and will continue to get want they intended by releasing the 300D for a long time to come.
I think you're right about Canon's choice of action now though, whether or not they knew this would happen. They are now choosing to ignore it, at least for the time being, and I believe that to be due to the reasoning above also.
