Please help with filters!!!

When it comes to filters, I am totally clueless. I have no idea which is which from the many available choices....

I am going to B&H today to browse through what they got and need your guys input on what I should be looking for.

First off, I will be mainly using the filter for landscape photography. I recently purchased the 17-40 f4L so I want something compatible with that lens only.

From my research, I think I need a good graduated filter and a filter holder. Maybe a polarizer?? And whats the deal with all those different colored filters?? Uy..........

Really would appreciate any comments and personal experience in this subject.

go to www.schneideroptics.co​m (the B+W) site. They have a great product brochure with descriptions of what each type of filter can achieve.

Look under filters and find the B+W handbook. It should get you started.

In order of priority, I would suggest to get a circular polarizer first. Then get a graduated neutral density filter, which is rectangular, and a filter holder for it.

It really isn't that bad. I am 1 hour from St. Louis. More like east central Missouri. Anyway there is a few small camera shops less than 15 min away. The weather is great here: 76 and sunny

I'm thinking about a Cokin system. I think it makes sense when you have several lenses of different sizes. In terms of what to buy, get graduated ND, very useful in landscape photography. Polarizers are very popular, but I don't think I'll ever need one. Remember not to put any filters, unless you really need one. Sometimes less is more
