hue/saturation? for auto-color, not sure how auto-contrast works, i know auto-levels works off the histogram? but not sure about the others and if i should be using them, i just tried it on an image and it yielded these results, the day was foggy so im thinking perhaps 'my' levels pp is the best result as it seemes to bump contrast a little when bringing in the left side of the histogram a fraction.

1. Out of the camera nothing done

hmm looking at them like this in this size there are only slight noticeable differences accept autocolout which adds what seems to be a blueish tinge to the background.

i dunno, opinions?

Pick up S. Kelby book cs2 for the digital photog.

I generally never use automatic functions but from what I remember you should establish a baseline in the darks and lights before your use the default setting in the auto functions.

It's outlined in the book, maybe someone else can look up how to establish the (what I calling a baseline) it's really the limits how your what your dark / lights to appear.

Kelby states for color correction:

Open the Curves dialog (CTRL+M)
double click the 1st eyedropper in the dialog (the one with black) and set R,G, B to 20. Click ok.

Double click the 3rd eyedropper. (the white one) and set R,G,B to 244. Click ok

Double click the middle eyedropper and set R,G,B to 133.

Click ok to exit the Curves Dialog and save the settings.

These setting will remain each time.

Go to the Layers Palette click the half white and black circle at the bottom and select THRESHOLD.

Drag the slider on the Threshold popup box all the way to the left then start moving it right. When you see black that is the darkest part of your image. Click ok to close the THRESHOLD DIALOG.

Click and hold the eyedropper tool and select Color Sampler tool.

Click on a black part of the image. This will mark the spot with a "1"

Double click the threshold layer again and this time in the popup dialog drag the slider all the way to the right. the slowly back to the left. This will show your highlights. Click ok.

With the Color Sampler Tool again select a white spot on your image. This will mark the image with a "2" You can now throw the threshold layer in the trash.

Open Curves Dialog again. Select the eyedropper with the half black click the #1 marker. Select the white eyedropper and click the #2 marker. Try to find a medium gray in your photo. Select the middle eyedropper and click on that gray area.

Take the very center of the curves grid and raise it just a bit to brighten the midtones. Click ok.

Remove the markers by going to the options bar and click CLEAR.
