digital photo professional RAW

Hello all,

I have just recently started shooting RAW and have a question regarding processing in DPP. When I view the RAW image on DPP, it is obnoxiously yellow/orange. On the camera's LCD (I use a Canon 30D and 20D), the image appears as it should, but when viewed on DPP, the aforementioned occurs. If I shoot the same image in JPEG, the image looks fine on the LCD and in DPP. I can correct the white balance of the shot in DPP, but I would rather the image appear in RAW in DPP as it does on the LCD and in JPEG. Both camera's settings are the same (I also tried a friend's 5D with same results). What am I missing?

Hi. Are you shooting RAW+Jpg? If so, does the jpg have the same cast as well? Things to check:
1. Are you shooting indoors with incandescent lighting?
2. Is the white balance set to Auto on your 30D?
3. Do you get the same cast when you view the RAW file in some other program such as Picassa?

I too recently started shooting RAW files and I sometimes notice a difference between my RAW file and JPG, but nothing as dramatic as you have described.

the Raw file is just that, the raw data captured by your camera's sensor. The LCD on your camera is meaningless, should only be used to see if you "got the shot" and to check the histogram. The jpegs produced by your camera have had "adjustments' applied to them in camera, based on the parameters you have set in the menu.

Hi Dom, Thanks for the reply. When I shoot RAW+JPEG, the RAW file is yellowish and the JPEG looks good. I shoot 100% outdoors - a lot in full sun, a lot in shade, and a lot at night. I photo primarily amphibians and reptiles. Yes, white balance is set to auto. When I viewed the images in PhotoMechanic, both the RAW and JPEG appeared fine.

Hi Steve,

Try downloading a RAW+JPG to your friend's computer. If there is no yellow cast then the problem may be with the DPP software on your computer. I have hundreds of RAW+JPEG files on my computer, and only a handful don't match each other. Most look very similar.

I am new to RAW as well, I am having a similar problem.

When I view and adjust my images in RAW they look different once converted to JPEG.
Is this something I will just have to learn to adjust for?

I am using CS2 and a 19 lcd, however what looks right in RAW changes once converted to JPEG.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds to me like a corrupt installation of DPP. The default WB and other parameters should be "as shot" which would make the initial RAW display quite similar to the LCD display and/or an independent jpg. If this is not the latest version of DPP (3.0.1.5), it may be a good idea to download it and install it over the present one.
