Hi
I'm a fairly new photographer but I shoot alot of action shots, specifically Hockey and Football, among other night sports.
I've read some faqs here about what to look for, but im still confused.
What are some good lenses for both these types of shots?
I was looking at 70-200mm lenses with F/2.8, but im on a bduget of under 1k.

I have a Rebel 400D.

any help, would be appreciated.

Canon Rebel XTi 400D
Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8
Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L (soon to be)

Don't know what it retails for in the US but I can heartily recommend the Sigma 70-200. Superb quality and excellent value compared to the Canon L. If the lights good you could add the 1.4TC (to give a 98-280 f/4) for a bit more reach. That's what I intend doing for mine. Check this page (external link)from my flickr for examples of motorsport, althoughI wasn't always shooting at f/2.8 so I could do a bit of panning.

Gear: 30D, Tamron 17-50 2.8, Canon 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM II, Sigma 70-200 2.8

70-200 2.8L goes for about 1,000 used i would def get that and a 1.4 if u need the extra reach

A used 70-200 non IS off the forum.

IS is of somewhat limited use for sports.

Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG Macro, great lens, great price.

$829.00 less 10% makes it $746.10. Smokin' deal! Only 'til June 30 though.

829 is a great price, but 746 is better. However, I didn't see that price displayed at the site you linked to. A little help, please :) .

yep, look around. I got my 70-200/2.8L for $899 as a refurb. It's great for night sports on a crop camera. It can be short for far side of the field action, but along the near half of the field it is fantastic.

Thanks, safehaven. I also got your PM. This lens has been high on my "to buy" list since I sold my 70-300 IS. At $746 plus free shipping, it's more than $150 less than B&H.

Another vote for Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens. It's a great lens and I used it for about a year before I upgraded to the L IS.
