I'd tell Canon to do it at the first estimate they gave you or return it, I'd also file a complaint with the BBB and see what comes from that. You could easily just pick up a refurbished 20D for a few bucks more or just use it as an excuse to upgrade to a newer model.

It hasn't been stated that work has been done nor that they're demanding payment and withholding his property or anything. I'm sure they'll happily release it to the OP without doing the work for the original quote.

Greg If it was requoted on that basis I'd argue that the shutter count is so high because it was firing off every second by itself!
