Hey everyone, well I'm finally ready to step my foot into the world of off-camera flash photography. After reading posts, threads, pages, reviews on both this site and Strobist, as well as finally aquiring the money, I think I'm ready. Originally, I was going to purchase the Strobist Starving Student Kit from Midwest Photography, but I realized that it didn't come with the Bogen stand, which I'd rather opt for over some generic brand (my Bogen tripod is amazing and I'd feel a lot more comfortable with that), so I decided to create my own kit.

After reading strobist I've come to this:
Bogen 3373 6' Light Stand
Westcott 43" Umbrella - Soft Silver
Hama Hot Shoe Adapter to Male PC Cord (for connecting to the V2 Triggers, I heard that they are not supportive at all)

I realized that I need an umbrella swivel and I don't know whats good, whats bad, what to look for, etc, so I'm mainly asking what umbrella swivel I should get? and if I'm missing anything else for the kit?

All of this will be paired with the Ebay V2 Cactus triggers and my Canon Speedlite 430EX. I figured I'd first try out the V2 triggers (as I'm doing this for fun) and if I need PW's I could always opt for them later and I won't lose much buying the triggers now (~$30).

Thanks--sorry about the long read :D

Have you tried talking to Midwest to see if they'll substitute the Bogen stand and charge you the difference?

I bought one of the kits from B&H that had the hotshoe/umbrella bracket included. It does it's job, no complaints. It's not a precision engineered component but really, it doesn't need to be.

Well I don't really need all those things, but I wouldn't mind having them. I'll drop them an email and see what they say.

For what it's worth, here's the umbrella bracket that came with the kit I have: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …117_Umbrella_Bracket.html (external link)

I haven't looked at the strobist kit to see what's included but here's one that I bought: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …Dome_XTC_Extra_Small.html (external link)

Components are all OK. The light stand is nothing to write home about but it's fine for the very light load the kit is designed for.
