I'm having problems with installing the Lightroom 1.1 update and would appreciate some help.

When I run the downloaded file it copies the install files to a new directory but when I then continue the install nothing happens.

If I double click the adobe lightroom lightroom.msi file that it extracted I get he following error:

"windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy".

The Microsoft Event Viewer also gives the message "Access to C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Desktop\Adobe\Lightroom 1.1\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.msi has been restricted by your Administrator by software publisher policy."

I have administrator privileges and I have a registered copy of lightroom 1 installed so I'm at a bit of a loss to what's wrong.

Any ideas?

Andrew

It's not a problem I've come across, but try this:

Uninstall 1.0 using Add/Remove Programs
Run the download again (not from the extracted files)
Hope it works this time!

Thanks Victoria,

Will I lose mapping to my files and collections, etc if I uninstall 1.0?

Cheers.... Andrew

Make sure you back up your database (.lrdb file) in case of problems upgrading the database itself, but otherwise, no, any 1.0 database will automatically upgrade on opening, and should contain all of your current files and collections etc.

This has nothing to do with Lightroom 1.0. Software restriction policies are a Windows feature typically used in a corporate environment to keep people from installing unapproved software on their desktop computers. If this is a personal system and not a corporate one, then it has probably been enabled inadvertently. You can google for "software restriction policies" to get more information.

I agree fully, and having Adminstrator right does not mean that they can be over ridden by the head honcho in the IT department, so if you cannot get around this I would approach the IT department directly.

By the path (Family), I'm guessing this is a home computer.

As has been stated, this is a Windows restriction. Some security programs can also try to work through Windows to limit what you can install.

You can check to see if there are any restrictive policies by going to -- Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy. There's a Software Restriction section there that you can check.

Thanks everyone for all your help. It's a private computer at home. I will investigate whether I have indeed inadvertently done something and report back.

I'm running XP Home and don't seem to have access to local security policy. I've been googling a lot but am still at a bit of a loss how to overcome this. I've tried closing down my firewall (Kerio) and virus checker (McAfee) but to no avail.

Hmmmmm ......

I bet McAfee is your problem. My dad has had some similar problems with McAfee in the past. He finally uninstalled it.

Uninstall Mcafee and switch to Avast!. You'll be much happier since it catches more and is free for personal use.

I have seen this before with McAfee. Other software though.

Also check your firewall settings, you may need to disable the firewall during install, since the software is going to go to Adobe to register, if the firewall is set to a high level of security it will stop traffic dead on its tracks, you can always go back and re-enable it after the install is complete.

I'd also make sure you're on SP2.

Thanks everyone for the advice once again . I've tried tinkering with the fire wall settings to no avail. I'll uninstall McAfee over the weekend and let you know how I go. At the moment though I'd better go to work

Just to update progress:

I switched over to Avast antivirus - removing McAfee - and 1.1 still wouldn't install due to software restriction policies.

Then I uninstalled Lightroom 1 using add/remove programs and tried installing 1.1 - same problem.

And now if I try to re-install Lightroom 1 - guess what - software restriction policies won't allow it.

Arrrrrgh:cry:

I'm starting to think I will need to do a complete re-install of my operating system and programs which will take the best part of a day.

Any suggestions before I launch into that??

Cheers .... Andrew
