Check out the info at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310791 (external link). It has instructions on disabling the policies.

Thanks spaceCow,

I tried running gpedit.msc and secpol.msc as suggetsed at the site but the programs are not found. From all I've read, it seems that you can only manage security settings from XP Pro and I'm XP home.

I'm sort of resigned to a full re-install - just got to make the time available - and make sure everything is backed up.

Have you tried doing a restore to the oldest time you can? Something may have changed since that restore point!

Have you contacted Adobe about this? They surely can help!

For what its worth, I have the same problem as you. I really think it has much to do with being compatible with Vista, as the original v1 LR installs fine now and always has. I suspect it is partially an Adobe implimentation of Vista coding rules/policies and this is the consequence, intended or otherwise. Also, it makes no sense to uninstall any antispy or antivirus, especially since you can just turn those off (at least kill the services), also, I suspect that a XP reinstall may not work, unless you install LR before any updates to XP, or.......? Who knows?

Good Luck, and if you get a fix, let us know!! Plz!

Just a random thought - go to Windows Update, choose Custom, install any Microsoft Installer (MSI) updates offered. This could be a bug in an old version of MSI.

Thanks again everyone for your help and suggestions.

Just to finish off the thread, I ended up doing a complete re-install of my system last weekend. It took a while, but I had all my data backed up and all my software handy and in a way it is nice to start from a nice fresh system every once in a while.

Lightroom 1.1 installed OK and just today I have imported my entire collection of photos over the last 5 years which is a real trip down memory lane. Even managed to get back my old catalogue - whew!

Now to play with the new features.

Cheers and thanks .... Andrew

Uninstall Mcafee...

I agree with the crowd. I dumped mcafee years ago... nothing but problems. If you restored your system and mcafee was originally part of it, my personal recommendations is to rid your system of that plague immediately. /Dan
