Well, now that we have the equivalent (I think?) of USM in Lightroom, what are your thoughts on it?

What are you finding for some generic optimal settings?

still not impressed by it. I can see something happening when playing with all the sliders, but it doesn't look that much sharper, maybe just noisier.

I think it sucks. I will still do my sharpening through PS. I know it has the same options/sliders as usm, but I do not see the drastic change that PS could give. I dont really mind though because prior to the update I still did sharpening through PS.

Much ado about nothing. I don't see this sharpening tool doing much. Maybe I need to zoom to 3:1 while sharpening to look for effect?

I just tried my own suggestion. Yeah - I can see the effect at 3:1 pretty easy. Especially on the "amount" slider. not sure what detail or masking do if anything.

Sharpening in LR is capture sharpening, not output sharpening so it does not have as much affect as USM or other options. Also make sure you are at 1:1 when using it. There is a great tutorial here:

Basically, still have to chuck images across to PS for another step in workflow :(

That depends on how sharp you want your shots. I haven't used it a lot yet but I am impressed with what I have seen. For most stuff I probably won't use PS, but for serious editing I will use PS since I most likely will have other stuff to do in PS anyway.

Also, if you print from LR you can use the output sharpening in the Print module.

Ahhh, good point well made. But I want some sharpening before sending to my online print company not my desktop printer.

Yes, hopefully that will be addressed in future updates or with third party add ons.

In the meantime there is a workaround. Apparently there is a way to go through the whole print process and instead of selecting a printer you select some type of capture device that saves the output as a jpeg. I read about it in the LR User to User forums at Adobe but don't specifically know of the program/plugin.

Went and saw the tutorial on sharpening, maybe the sharpening works only in Mac's b/c I tried it again with a new set of shots. Sharpening doesn't seem to do much. It's very slight when I slide the thing all the way into the red.

I was hoping the LR 1.1 would be better, but I think I'm gonna go back to DPP.

From what I have seen so far, you need to use the sliders a lot harder (ie more to the right) than you would traditionally do with USM.... is that a reasonable assumption?
