Robert, that's a mighty sucky experience. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. Congratulations on your broadband. What, are you trying to show us dial-upers up? ;) I know, I know. I'm going to upgrade as well. Don't ask me when - soon!

Hi Josh. I like to add words to. I see you adding words all the time, and hoped you'd show up in here eventually to introduce yourself. You're a funny, if not slightly kinky word-adder. Welcome!

You know, I've tried dsl and cable...but when I moved out here into the hill country of TX dial up was the only thing available. Since I only have a desktop, I couldn't use a broadband card untl I saw the stuff Sprint had...lemme tell you, its a breeze now.

Robert, I'll admit something to you. I'm not very computer tech savy. I've stayed with dial-up because switching to broadband is a huge unknown, intimidating thing that I have been leery about approaching. Like you're explaining to a 6th grader, how exactly does someone go about getting broadband? Break it down into bite size pieces and simple words, please. Thanks! :)

Well Becky, let me tell you. First thing is you have to make sure that broadband is available where you live. Check the internet for the phone company in your area for dsl, the cable company in your area for cable internet. On the company website there should be a link to check availablity. Typically you type in your address and/or zip code and the computer checks to see if the service is available. Reason being is dsl only works within a few miles of the switch box and cable internet is only limited by weather or not you can get cable in your home. IF you have one of thses available, you can call and have a tech come over to set it up or follow the instructions provided in the setup kit. Now, if your situation is like mine where only dial up is available, the sprint broandbad card would be the next logical thing available. Just install the program once, plug in the broadband card and connect to the web. If you have a desktop like me, there are also sprint USB broadband antennas available. Just remember, setting up broadband is the same as setting up the dial up service, the only difference is where the internet data is being transmitted into your home. Personnaly, I would try for cable internet or sprint broadband before dsl. When I had dsl, the filters kept going bad on me, The filters are the little blocks that allow you to use the phone when on the internet...separates the internet signal from the phone signal. If I need to be clear on something, let me know.

Thanks for the input Robert. I don't want cable internet because I don't have cable and don't want to have to pay for both cable and the internet. Is that an issue, or can I have them independently of each other? I know we have cable internet, I've gotten fliers in the mail. I know my phone company has DSL, because they tried to get me to sign up the last time I spoke with them. This seems like the most intelligent decision for me, as there'd be little I'd have to change with my current set-up. Less change = a good thing. Who did you use for DSL, and how can I avoid filters going bad? You're aces big guy!!!

Well, here in my city, you can have cable internet without ordering cable tv. Would just be a little more expensive since there would be no multiple service discount. However, with the price comes faster service and it is well worth it.

the dsl setup would be less change, only sending you the filters and changing the signal to your home. On the filter thing, you cannot prevent them from going bad. Once they lose the ablity to filter out the signal, they are kaput. I had AT&T at the time and was sent 12 filters when I ordered dsl. By the time my 2 yr contract was going to be up, all but 3 filters had gone bad. I called up AT&T and told them of the situation and to send me more filters since they went out (told by tech support) and then they asked me "How many would you like? They are $12.99 each." I 'bout choked on my saliva when they told me I had to PAY $12.99 for each new filter I wanted....no freebies after set up. So I kindly told them do not renew me, I am going to cable internet. All this needs is a cable signal going into the house and the modem which you plug the computer to...fin. To me, they are both equally little change.

AT&T, shiza. That's who my phone service is through. Scratch DSL. I have cable coming into my house at exactly one point. My house is old. ;) And it's not near my computer. Is there no other simple solutions? Broadband sounds all complicated.

Do you have a desktop or laptop? I only ask because with cable you have to options.

Wireless from the modem with a wireless router if a laptop.

Or ask the tech to put a cable line where the computer is and problem solved if you have a desktop.

I've got a laptop and a PC. The PC is old and I use it for gaming and writing, so we'll ignore it for now. Now slow down here Robert. You're getting techy. I know what wireless internet is. And I know the wireless needs a modem. How does the internet get into the modem? Cable? So if it's wireless cable internet, I wouldn't need to have them add more cable lines or anything, right? Because the modem could live where the cable outlet is and my laptop can just roam freely. Yes?

Just don't take it too far. That's what got the first thread locked by the moderators. ;)

Don't worry lonnie, I try not to take it too far... I think Manties are about as kinky as I get in the (nice) thread.

I may throw in a kinky word here and there, but if I see someone else has thrown out a kinky word I usually try to add a mundane word to offset the kink, so we don't get our thread closed again. That last thread was a real kink fest. ;)

Josh, how could you not be slightly kinky with a name like wannasmaxx? It's hilarious. :)
