The PC is old and I use it for gaming and writing, so we'll ignore it for now. Now slow down here Robert. You're getting techy. I know what wireless internet is. And I know the wireless needs a modem. How does the internet get into the modem? Cable? So if it's wireless cable internet, I wouldn't need to have them add more cable lines or anything, right? Because the modem could live where the cable outlet is and my laptop can just roam freely. Yes? Sorry for the late reply. Your right on track, you don't need to add another outlet if you get a wireless router. In your case, the perfect set up would be to have the cale internet come in from the outlet that you have into the modem. Then buy a wireless router (I bought mine for $35) the wireless router can be set next to your desktop PC, run the signal from the modem into the router and then to the PC. The wireless signal will allow you to roam the house with the laptop; if your laptop has a wireless radio installed or a card. Most current laptops do. Robert | Gear |

That last thread was a real kink fest. ![]() Josh, how could you not be slightly kinky with a name like wannasmaxx? It's hilarious. ![]() The name isn't meant as wanna smaxx. I used to be into nitro RC racing and wanted a model called sportmaxx.. or SMAXX for short... hence the name... buttttttttttt... As I get older, I get kinkier, so maybe your interpretation could be useful.... Thanks, Becky!!! 20D, BG-E2, 24-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8LIS, 430EX

So let me ask this, do I have to hook the wireless router up to the PC? It's an old computer, I'd rather not monkey with it. Couldn't I just have the modem to the wireless router and then walk around with my laptop? I have an internal wireless card on my laptop. Sometimes my neighbors wireless signal makes it over to my house. But I'm a good girl and don't use it, much. How could I prevent that from happening? my signal from getting to someone else's house? is a wireless network a huge security risk? Thanks guys for answering my questions, I appreciate your patience and knowledge. Thanks Josh for the diagram, it helped me understand a bit better. Wanna Smaxx is an awesome name, for every kinky reason you can imagine. Even if it wasn't what you first intended. Honestly, there's more to me than a healthy appreciation of kink. I feel like that's all I've talked about lately. So I'll mention two photo ops I've got next week to switch it up a little. My photography professor called me yesterday. In conjunction with Canon and the EAA event organizers, he's gotten 12 free passes for next Wednesday to the EAA Air Venture show. IF you don't know, it's one of if not thee biggest air show in the country. They had every kind of plane imaginable, and it's swarming with 800,000 people every year. Even though I'm on summer break and not in his class, he's offered me one of the tickets. What will our day entail? We get to the show and head for the Canon building. Canon is going to do an air show workhsop for our group, talking about how to shoot an air show and just photography in general. The icing on the cake? We then get to check out their equipement, we're talking everything up to and including a nice 600 mm lens to shoot the air show. Afterwards we check the gear back in and can walk around shooting the exhibits and planes on the ground. I'm so lathered up about it, you have no idea! And then, THEN... On the Friday following that Wednesday is a Green Bay Blizzards game. The Blizzards are an arena football team. My professor (same one) is the official photog for the team. Last semester he got our class into the game with press passes. He's done it again this semester and invited me to join them. We got to walk through the business areas, through the locker areas, right on onto the field, next to the TV crews, anywhere we wanted to go to shoot the game. I've got a couple of new lenses I want to play with some more, last time I had a blast, and I'm excited to get to participate again. Verily, the awesomeness fell from the skies and landed in my lap, and it was good. Stop...I'm jealous. Your got the opportunity for two things I like, play with Canon lenses and go to the airshow. Don't have to move the desktop. TheGreatOg wrote: I have an internal wireless card on my laptop. Sometimes my neighbors wireless signal makes it over to my house. Right out of the box, chance are your router will be "unsecure" You can make it "secure" by typing the router's addy into your web browser ( like firefox, Opera, IE)and changing the WEP code. Sounds harder than it is. Maybe when I get home I'll post a little how-to. Someone might be able to help you in the meantime as I got another 4 hours or so till I'm back at home. What brand name router are you getting? Linksys are the easiest to set up. 20D, BG-E2, 24-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8LIS, 430EX

I need a wireless modem and a router. Let me clarify now. I call the cable company and tell them I want ... what? Wireless internet? Broadband? But definetly not cable. So they flick the magic switch somewhere in space and pipe it into my house. I buy the modem and router from them? When I call to order the internet, can I order that stuff at the same time? Is this what you were describing in your previous post Robert? I'm not really this dense, just nervous about making an investment in techy things I'm woefully ignorant of. Do I have to sign a contract for a certain period of usage with them, or can I try it and if it's not the best solution for me, cancel it and try something else? Thanks for your patience guys! I’m assuming that you mean the Oshkosh show. If so I am so jealous. It is the most awesome air show for homebuilders and has some of the most interesting aircraft you’ll ever see. I have not been for years but is a former life a group of us built planes for fun. I was involved in three. The first right out of H/S was an open cockpit glider launched by a huge rubber band. (No sh*T) Actually it was the precursor to the bungee and relaxed was almost 200 feet long and when tied to a tractor stretched maybe a thousand or more. The second was a Breezy (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/kitspages/breezy.php Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Yes Becky, you have it. Although, its not wireless internet...its cable internet. I am guessing you have Time Warner Cable, if so...ask for Roadrunner. They send/give you the modem. You will then go buy the wireless router from Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, RadioShack or some type of similar store. That is was what I was trying to describe previously, but guess failed at being specific. I don't doubt your sincerity...but what is moral fiber? Is it like Benefiber Robert | Gear |

EAA in Oshkosh. It's about 20 minutes from my house to their front gate. You could come along, we could have lunch and shoot together if you're interested. I'll let you fondle the borrowed Canon gear I'll be sporting. Becky Keeling, Denver-based Portraiture and Travel Photographer. My world, from the heart.
