LR uses side car files. Where does Canon DPP store the same data?

I think Canon writes directly to the .cr2 files (still non-destructively into the metadata)

LR only uses sidecar files for RAW files and only then when you tell it to write XMP data. For JPEG, PSD, TIFF, and DNG it writes the changes directly to the file.

DPP adds the data as a recipe to the RAW file I believe, like David said.

In LR 1.1 the option in the preferences to write the changes directly to the file isn't there anymore. does that mean that it automatically does that or am I just blind and can't find it anymore?

This site is so good. I just had to look up what the xmp (I think that is what it was) icon thing was next to my PS images. I Googled and found out more than I wanted about sidecar info. Have you ever opened one up with a text editor (MS wordpad or text note)? Quite a bit of interesting info stuffed in there to read. The odd part was I was going to ask the same question aout DPP and why don't I see it there. I come here and see someone beat me to it. :)

It is still there just in a different spot.

Click Edit > Preferences.
Toward the bottom of the General Tab is a button that says "Go to catalog settings". Click it. Now go to the last tab "Metadata" and it is the third option. VoilĂ !
