I realise that this has probably been covered, but for all those (like me) that have downloaded the upgrade to V1.1, but just can't bring themselves to click the "install" button, could someone please clarify what, exactly, is the best "sequence of events" to ensure that the install goes as smooth as possible?

Obviously backing up the exisiting library is already done, but AFTER 1.1 installs (and tramples all over whatever was working before ;-)a) are there actions that should be carried out (like re-generating previews or whatever?)

Sorry if this sounds a dumb question, but just thought it would be good to have a simple 1 to 10 checklist of things "to do".....

Thanks guys.

For some reason, when I first installed the upgrade, it didn't automatically open my default library (now called catalog) so I had to open it manually when the installation ended. Other than that, the install worked flawlessly on my machine. I would recommend that you re-visit the preferences, as they've added some new ones and moved a few around. Some other folks have had issues with keywords coming over so that might be an area to look at also.

TJ,

It is relatively straighforward once, as you say, you backup your Lib first. Just let it do its thing. A lot of your 1.0 settings will be imported via the catalogue.

The Preferences have moved all over tho.

And in particular this article..

Which I found very helpful.

Thanks Rick, I've made a mental note of those...

Al, thanks for that, I'll take a look. It's just like any new software, there are always issues (Microsoft 98, 2000, ME (what's ME?) XP and Vista all spring to mind!) and generally I never jump in while the waters still boiling - I prefer to let it cool a little first.

Except, this is Lightroom we are talking about here (yes, I know it's still software) and I just WANT it to work!

Maybe I'll try it on my laptop first - at least that isn't quite so important if it all goes pair shaped! :-)

Anyone else got any thoughts or recommendations - please feel free to add them.

TJ,

As long as you backup (offline if necessary) both your 1.0 lib and the original install file you can always revert.

Al, Ive actualy got the original V1.0 as a boxed product, just wasn't sure how practical it would be to reinstall as doesn't the new version "update" files (like sidecar files) during the upgrade process - making going back to V1 not possible?

TJ,

if you use XMP files they will be unchanged. the old lib file will be converted to a new cat file but the old one will be left alone (back it up to CD just in case!) Everything else like previews is the same.

I updated both main PC (XP) and laptop (Vista) no hassles at all.

Also, LR told me during library conversion that it was backing up my old library anyway (so I now have 3 old copies  ).

My upgrade went as smooth as silk. I just ran the installer then manually pointed it to my database file when I started 1.1 and it picked up right where I left off in 1.0.

Just a thought - if you have a number of Library files (as I do), do you simply open each in turn and LR converts as it opens them?

Yes. And it will remind you of this when you first open 1.1.
