Well, it doesn't come up as an error, but it is certainly concerning especially since I have borrowed the lens

I borrowed a 28-200 f3.5-5.6 USM off one of my photographer friends, first time I mounted it on the camera, it was fine. I then took it off because I needed to use my kit lens for a stage shot. I then changed back to the 28-200. I mounted it on, switched the camera on (400D/XTi) and then it came up with the aperture on 00 and in manual focus. I know it's not the camera because I have tried the rest of my lens' (17-55 & 80-200) and they work perfectly.

Anyone know what I have done? And can I fix it?

If I can't I'm gonna be in some trouble...

Thanks,

Kri

Try cleaning the contacts for the AF points on the lens.

Aperature 00 means it does not see the lens (but still might take pix in manual mode.) Take it off and try again and/or clean the contacts on the rear of the lens.

Gasrocks, it does still take pics in manual mode (just tried it)
I shall try your suggestions...What should I use to clean the contacts?

Its hard to think what you might have 'done' from what you said. If you just took it off and put it back that shouldn't cause any harm, we all do that all the time.

There is an obvious point - make sure it really is on properly, i.e. turned all the way around untill the lens lock clicks in place.

You could also try any switches on the lens just in case.

Other than that and cleaning the contacts there is nothing you can do. Just hand it back to your mate, explain the situation get him to try it on his camera and if it doesn't work I guess it will be up ti him whether he blames you or not. If you did nothing else I can't see how its your fault, but I wasn't there so.........

Try cleaning the lens contacts, make sure it is mounted on your camera properly... if you've tried both of those and still no joy then the lens is FUBAR'd and will need a trip to the Canon repair centre.

It is a really hard lens to put on and take off (I think it has been subjected to a drop, but that was before I had touched it) so I twisted it a little bit more and it now works :)
Thanks for your help Mark & Glenn, I really appreciate this forum :)

Glad to hear that you figured it out....just didn't have it fully seated :) BTW...some lenses seem to go on really easy and others need a little more pressure.

An those are mostly 3rd party lenses.
