[@Rovers_Andy] :: They have a "weird" haze ? Over-exposed ? Fog ? OOF? I can't nail it, but the IQ is not the one the 400f/2.8 IS is known for.

I see that in sports and wildlife (same thing?) sometimes. I think it is a combination of the angle and harshness of the light, plus, at times, haze in the air.

In any case, I make that go away with two tools:
- Set blacks level in Camera Raw, and
- Local contrast pass USM in CS3

I must say if the 400 f/2.8 did not weigh so much, I surely would own it instead of the 400 f/4 DO.

I can only dream of contributing to this thread someday.

I just have to win a huge lottery, that's all.

Some of them do have a bad haze but this was due to standing at a right angle to the sun and panning across it. unfortunately my best shots with the 400 i cant put up as they're all from UK League level footy. Maybe just maybe i can get one published in the papers (crosses fingers)

An eclectic mix here from my 400/2.8 L IS.

I'll shoot whatever I'm asked to mostly with 1D3 and 1D2 bodies but use Nikon D3s as well when I'm forced to.

I must admit that this is the one lens that I still really really want!
I can't justify it as this is only a hobby for me, but it's the one bit of kit that I still lust after. But as prices seem to be going crazy high in the UK the chances are pretty slim that I'll actually go for it. Nice dream though...
