Latest version (2.4) of Camera Raw plugin installed - Photoshop CS opens raw images from a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II just fine, file ext is .CR2 however when trying to open Canon Rebel XTi images in Photoshop it tells me it could not complete my request because it is not the right type of document, these also have the .CR2 extension. any ideas?

The XTi has the new dust delete data feature that embeds some new info into the picture in order to work. My guess is that while they kept the same extension, the new data somehow confuses anything looking for the old cr2 files. The XTi has been out for some time now, so chances are there is a patch for the XTi's cr2 files on the web.

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)

You need at least Camera Raw 3.6 to be able to process the XTi raw files. That means you need to be on PSCS2 or later. PSCS won't be able to do that unless you convert the XTi raw file to the DNG format first with the latest version of the DNG converter program.

As PacAce says, you need support in Camera Raw for your particular camera. You have two options - use DNG Converter 4.1 to convert the RAW files from the XTi to DNG, the use the DNGs with Photoshop CS / Camera Raw 2.4, or upgrade to Photoshop CS3. Whilst the latter costs money, I believe there's significant and worthwhile enhancements in Photoshop CS3 - not least all the new features of Camera Raw 4.1.

Every Canon model has a different version of the RAW format. Between the CRWs and the CR2s there must be better than a dozen Canon RAW formats running around out there. I think they do it just to annoy the third party companies.

Thanks for info. It's pretty frustrating, but I guess I'll have to consider upgrading to CS3.

If you are happy with cs2, (like me) and don't want to spend more money, just go with Camera Raw 3.6. Works for me.

The original poster has Photoshop CS. With Photoshop CS2, upgrading to Camera Raw 3.7 would have solved the problem.

Just wanted to update this thread, I had to use the DNG converter from the 3.7 Camera Raw version (not the 3.7 camera raw plugin, though) The DNG converter from my current version 2.4 camera raw, did not recognize the the xti raw files.

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to wait a little to upgrade to CS3, I know it'll be worth the $ -- I really want to get some new lenses first. This is a great forum, I'm new to the DSLR world and have spent hours reading some of the very helpful tips on this site.
