Canon 35mm tilt shift lens

Just got my Canon 35 TS lens back from the shop that was converting it to an EF mount. Very impressive indeed. I already have the 90 TS-E lens. Wanted wider but even though it is an L, the 24 TS-E does not get rave reviews for IQ. I read about the Canon 35 TS lens and that most thought it was the sharpest 35mm TS lens ever made, better than Oly or Nikon. It has a lot of tilt and a lot of shift and it rotates. Initial testing indicates it is sharp center or edge at 2.8 and I cannot tell difference in crops until I get to f/16 and f/22 which are a bit softer, of course. If you are willing to do manual focus and stop down metering, I'd say it is well worth getting. The 35 and 90 seem like nice coverage to me. If I am doing panoramas via. stitching together different amounts of shift, it is going to be on a tripod and the focus/metering shouldn't be an issue. How exactly does the TS lens work? I haven't figured it out, they look cool but what exactly are there purpose? I do not own one either.

You can tilt the plane of focus (up, down, left, right) in other words move your DOF around in a creative way. Shift is great for panoramas. Since you are using the same lens for each shot, they stitch together well. Shifting is like you moved the camera in a different direction without moving it from where it is. Not a great explanation but there are many threads on tilt shift.

My God - I was just about to buy a 24 'til I read this!

One of these days I'll get a Canon TS lens...for now, I have an old, completely manual 35mm f/2.8 PC lens from Nikon circa 1969, which I just use an EF adapter with. The lens is quite sharp, and it's shift only, but what a steal....$75 + $20 for the Nikon->EOS adapter.

Actually, the 24 is much better than anybody wants you to believe. Personally I believe it is a conspiracy by people who either don't want it to sell, or who want to buy all copies themselves .

I just picked up one of these beauties for next to nothing with the aim of converting it to an EOS mount. Rather than pay big $$ to get it converted (or even bigger $$$ on a TS-E), I am machining a new mount myself, which is relatively easy in this particular lens since it has no mechanical couplings like most FD lenses. I'll post a step-by-step on POTN once I've finished. My initial test showed f/2.8 to be a bit soft, but was much better from f/4 up. Haven't checked on the tilt/shift IQ yet but I expect it to be pretty good.

I have one of these beauties, but my instructions are only in French and German. Does anybody have a copy of the English instructions they could scan or copy?

I guess it depends on which version you are referring to.. 24L TS-e II gets rave reviews.. it just costs $2K to get one. :S

Did you notice that the original post and the entire thread less the last post was written in June 2007, 2 years before the 24 TSE II was introduced?
And yes the current version of the 24 TSE II is really an outstanding optic. I am very impressed with my copy.

I'm glad the error was pointed out, I hadn't noticed either and I'd quite like to get a 24 TSE sometime.

Photobiz: I'd like the link to your machined mount and possibly a .dxf file if you have one for the part.
