Has anyone experienced this problem with their 20D? While shooting under normal conditions, the camera will some times shut off without warning. If the user turns the on/off switch from On to Off and back to On, then the camera will function as normal. This happened a few times within a week of shooting. I had a fully charged battery pack, so I don't think batter power is a problem. When the shut off happened I was using the canon 24mm-70mm f/2.8 or canon 70mm-200mm f/2.8 IS. Please help me.

Are you sure it is not just powered down due to manufacturer defaults? There is a C.fn where you can alter this default behavior. If the power switch is still on it is only necessary to touch the shutter button to wake up the camera. You don't have to cycle the power switch.

That is what I was thinking.

Yea, I am positive. The problem is when it's in sleep mode, it does not wake up when I am ready to shoot. After entering sleep mode, the camera only wakes up if I turn the power Off and back On. This is the problem I've had with the 20D.

The 20D will "go to sleep" if you don't do things with it for a specified time period. Merely touching the shutter button will "wake it up" again. This happens all the time when I'm out using my camera.

They appear to not be listening to you. If it doesn't wake up when you push the shutter button to the focus position (half-cocked so to speak) then there is a definate issue and I would get it checked.

If it doesn't wake up with a half push of the shutter button then there is a problem and have the camera checked.

Mikerault,

That is exactly what I am trying to convey to the forum. The Camera does not wake up after pressing the shutter button after it falls asleep. This happens randomly when shooting with the 20D and those lenses (24mm-70mm & 70mm-200mm) lenses. This has been my problem with the 20D. Has anyone seen this issue?

No, but then again, I'm using a 30D the majority of the time.

As an aside, you could have stated in post #1 what you did in post #4 and not had us tell you about sleep mode....

I've shot over 8000 images with mine, other than the occasional Err99 (underwater with a housing) I have not seen this issue.

Blue Deuce,

I am using the battery grip that goes with the 20D or 30D. Perhaps this grip could be the problem.

Just a few thoughts that I have experienced. My batteries were charged but they were not new any longer. I was able to take just a few shots and then the camera would die. Replacing them with fresh ones solved it that instance. Another thing that has happened is if the knob you tighten the grip with is not completley snug as tight as it would go the little bit of slop between the body and the grip prevented the contacts from making contact.

Just a couple of annoying things that have happened to me.

Blue Deuce,

I wish it were that easy. The battery pack is tight and the batteries are freshly charge. This is just a little bug that I've experience with my 20D recently while.

try this. take out your grip and shoot for a few days without it. if it does the same its your camera, if it stops its your grip.
