It's still not really up to par, is it?!

I just can't pin it down, but it just isn't USM, is it?

Sorry,

I could either subscribe to this thread covertly or do it by making a smart-ass remark! Sorry ;)

I'm interested in the replies. AS someone who never used USM and just used the default sharpening setting in RSP I am keen to see if I can do pretty much the same in LR.

I think it's intended to be 'capture' sharpening rather than 'final output' sharpening (for want of better words).

That's a useful resource - thanks.

How would I go about installing those for LR1.1? I've never used PS/CS.

I don't really understand the difference between capture and output sharpening, if someone would care to elaborate, I'd appreciate it.

I actually really like the new Sharpening.

I created a preset for default sharpening I'll do on import:

Amount is about 75% up
Radius is @ 1.0
Detail is about 40%
Masking is about 60%

I really like it actually!

I like LR, first time playing with it today. I was able to get all the details from the subjects face (bumps, acne, etc.) to show up when before that it was a bit soft with the sharpening. Not what I exactly wanted but cool nonetheless that it's that "powerful".

I'll not be so hesitant to shoot in jpeg now with the control that LR 1.1 offers. Very happy with it to say the least but its a bit buggy in my machine....although its probably more my machine than the program.

A bit OT, sorry :D

Yes, I like the improved sharpening too.

Just a couple of clarifications on your numbers, if you would please:

1) When you say "Amount is about 75% up" I assume you mean it is set at 75%, rather than a 75% increase over the default value.

The default values in LR are:
25%
1.0
25%
0%

2) What type of image do you use these for? Closeups, landscapes?

When did voluptuous become voluminous?

I don't have Lightroom on this computer, so I was just pounding out numbers from the best of my memory. The Amount slider is 75% the way to the right, and likewise for the other numbers/values.

I use these on almost everything - as a capture sharpening (I apply them on import) along with some other basic adjustments.

If I care enough about a picture or it is being sent for print at a larger size than 8 x 10, I'll do an output sharpen in USM.
