Hi Folks I had a problem too with the slides only playing for about 30 in the collection and thanks to the advice i did the following after trying every variation possible to the point i was sick to my stomach looking at the same shots repeating over and over ....i rendered the standard image preview at 1:1 after shutting down and hey bingo it worked no problem. I also made sure to select all images from the when playing choice. As regards the update of Light room I had just bought scott kelbys lightroom book and of course this doesnt include the update changes so now im back looking at adobe tutorials and more confusion trying to remember everything..

Thanks in2photos I just got the scott kelby update so all the extra info is there..One thing confuses me about light room is how much space i am eating up on my lap top.So i wonder if there are any suggestions..Heres my set up..I started with a mac g4 with now only 15gb remaining then i added an external drive which i upload all my images on to and then import them into lightroom as needed. With 100gb on the lacie I decided to buy another lacie 1TB and my plan is now to make this my main storage unit and use the smaller lacie as a back up.My question is what happens in my lap top as i add to my lightroom library and will i quickly run into problems with storage there of data? What files and what space is located and added to by lightroom there..Now I hope this doesnt sound too much like I am a novice to computers but what i really need to know is a good long term set up for all the material i will be processing thanks

Mark,
I have approx 10k images in my Catalog file is 120+MB currently. The bill for a full LR preview directory is several GB on top of the negative (ie original) files.,

Like Al said the file size can get pretty big for the catalog but way bigger for the preview folder. This is one of the reasons why I believe a desktop is better for processing unless you are on the go all the time. Storage in a laptop can be a concern. most of the pros seem to keep their catalogs and images on small external drives. This is great if you are constantly doing gigs and gigs of work but for hobbiests it just doesn't work. I currently have 3 internal drives and one of them has 2 partitions. A 160GB drive that has 50GB for the OS, and 110GB for DATA (including my LR catalogs and previews). I then have a seperate 200GB drive for photos only. I also have a 500GB drive that backs up everything as well as backing up originals to DVD.

For me this is the hardest part about our hobby. Books and tutorials are not written for us on file management. They are written for pros. Maybe I should write a book when I figure out what the heck I am doing.

I have all my negatives on my main PC and just export previews and metadata to my laptop. If I am away I would simply transfer the negatives back to the main PC fromt he laptop as a catalog export then delete the originals off the laptop.

HI well it seems the external driv is the way to go which is what i am doing and having checked my laptop drive there doesnt seem to be any files building up in there directly connected to light room as i have everything i think in the external drive but i am still not a hundred percent on the possibility that my mac g4 may be doing some filing without my knowing in its own drive. So if anyone can enlighten me on that great..On another note back to the slide show issue I discovered that you cant export the slide show to be burnt as a dvd which and i hope i am correct about this is very dissapointing and also it can only be exported as a pdf with of course no sound track which means you cant finish off the project to hand to clients without more work on it. So what have you guys done to solve this? I am using OSX tiger so would imovie or i dvd be the way to go I havent really used them much yet
