I read in a few different places that there is NO duty on photographic equipment - but there is still the Canadian tax.

Looking at the 70-200L IS 2.8:

_______________

Canada: $2199 * 1.14 harmonized tax (Nova Scotia)=

$2506!
_______________

US/Adorama: $1637 (ship incl.) * conversion= $1730....

...then add the 1.14 harmonized tax on that=1730*1.14=

$1972!!
_______________

That's a big difference of $534.00!!

Anyone done this, and is my math close?

Sounds 'bout right. Just beware of shipping method if using courier. Pick something expedited and not ground or there are brokerage fees on top of it.

Never purchased from Adorama, myself, but I do buy from the US for lenses. I also bought the 70-200 2.8 IS, but I bought it from BH and shipped to a friend's place in NY and went to visit him.

Best bet is if you know someone within reasonable driving distance or where you wouldn't mind paying the airfare to go visit in the US. That's what I always do. Either I order it, or just run the tab on my friend. haha. Then I fly to NY and pick it up. Free trip with the savings!

Gear list? A couple of bodies, a couple of elle's, and a few misc. items

I have ordered from both Adorama and B&H and both gave good service. One product I bought from Adorama was defective (not their fault, the box was still sealed) so I gave them a call and arranged to return if for a refund. They credited my credit card shortly after. It took longer to get my money back from Canada Border Services who wanted copies of invoice, the original customs form, correspondence and my credit card statement showing the refund. I have never been too impressed with our tax collectors and this reinforced my opinion.

If you order by UPS (Express, or Expedited) from either company you will be charged HST in the Atlantic provinces (PST + GST in the rest of Canada and just GST in Alberta), but not customs broker charges. I don't think Adorama offers USPS, but it you ship by post office they will charge you a $5 customs clearing charge and the same HST. I prefer UPS. It is a little more expensive, but you can track your pacel and know exactly where it is. I have had the post office take several weeks to make an delivery and have no idea where it was in the process.

I've ordered from Adorama just a few weeks ago. Saved quite a lot of money this way compared to Canadian stores. UPS Express delivers next business day, so the process was really fast.

Now, one things that does bother me is that the warranty card has "USA ONLY" printed on it in big red letters. I wonder what happens if I ever need to send the lens for warranty adjustment or repair - is it Canon Canada or Canon USA? In case it must go to the US, it's the same story again with border taxes, not to mention increased shipping charges.

From B&H:

As a rule, Grey Market items cost less than their USA counterparts. The warranty of Grey Market items are often, but not always, the same as their USA counterparts. Specific details of product warranties vary by product and manufacturer.

If you should experience a problem with a product sold with a USA warranty, it can be sent to any of the manufacturer’s worldwide authorized service facilities for servicing. A "direct import" or grey market item would have to be returned to B&H Photo-Video if it required in-warranty attention.
A resident of the USA may wish to make the buying decision based on price since the cost of shipping to a US service center or to B&H should be about equal.

A non-USA resident should consider the cost of returning a product to B&H in New York for servicing as opposed to the cost of taking the product to a local warranty service center.

Yeah if you buy USA import rather than Grey market on Canon products you'll get a North American warranty, i.e. US & Canada. I'd avoid the Grey market few dollars savings in order to get Canadian accepted warranties on official US imports. If you were buying Nikon that would be different. They only provide US warranties for even official imports so Grey market savings are good for them.

Well it looks like the get10back has been removed for Adorama stuff.
