I just purchased a Canon 30D. Could you guys give me your opinion on which 2 lenses I should start with. There are so many choices and I know it depends on what you are shooting and trying to accomplish with your photography. I still have a lot to learn but I need to start with something. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

No kit lens with that 30D?

I guess it will depend on budget, how about a 24-70L, about US$1000? And a 70-200 2.8 IS (about US$1500)

Otherwise go here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141406

Since he did say which 2, go with both of the Tamron 28-75 and Canon 70-200l F4. Sounds like a good pair.

I have just gone through this exercise. After much research here and elsewhere I decided on the 24-70 f/2.8L and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. They are heavy, expensive lenses but I was just fortunate that I had a little spare cash to be able to afford them right now.

That would have been my suggestion as well. Its a bit of a cost to start off with, but if you are serious about it then it will save you going through the "what lens should i buy" thing later on.

A good addition further down the track would be something like the sigma 12-24 or canon 10-22 if you wanted wide.

how about a 17-40L and a 50 1.4 to start with?
They aren't super expensive yet deliver very high quality images. It's a lightweight kit and you can do tons of stuff with that.

Good point SPAM. I wanted to try and avoid having a bunch of lenses I don't use later on even though I might have to spend a little extra to start.

it depends on what your budget is.

I have relatives who want to spend very little money as they get their foot in the door. I recommend the 28-105 3.5-4.5 mkII, the Sigma 70-300 and the 50 1.8. I think that's a pretty well rounded setup right there.

If money isn't a huge issue, I'd go with at least the 17-55 2.8 IS.
