everyone has their own opinion at what they think YOU should get... but it comes down to what you want to shoot and whose opinion you trust the most

i'd say 17-55mm f2.8IS + 70-200mm f4L IS

Same but if you have the $$, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

If you already have this lens why not go for -

EF-S 10-22 & 70-200 F4 L (IS version if you have a greater budget) with x1.4 Canon or Kenko tele converter.

The best 2 lens combo for the 30D is the 17-55 f2.8 IS and 70-200 f4 IS (f2.8 ver if you want a stop more speed but it's bigger & heavier), IMO, as this covers most situations that you will ever encounter.

The decision all depends on what type of shots you shoot though as prime lenses can be quite a bit faster than primes and give better DOF creative type shots.

For most fun, 10-22mm efs, and then the EF 24-105 F4

next be 50mm F1.4, then 70-200, then 100-400, then Primes and macro

Would only buy one EFS unless you really are stuck with budget and intend to keep the 30D a long time

I just bought the 24-105 f/4 IS L and the 70-200 f/4 L and couldn't be happier. The 24-105 is the perfect walk around lens. I used a 24-70 for a while and was always wishing I had a little extra length. I love them both, though to do miss the DOF the f/2.8 gave me.

IMHO, the 24-105 is all around better (i.e. more versatile) than the 24-70.

I just purchased a Canon 30D. Could you guys give me your opinion on which 2 lenses I should start with. There are so many choices and I know it depends on what you are shooting and trying to accomplish with your photography. I still have a lot to learn but I need to start with something. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The best two lens setup I know for a 1.6x crop camera is

17-40 f/4L
70-200 f/4L IS (or without IS).

This is a fantastic setup that will keep you busy for hours.

That's why I asked. Because I know the kit lens for the 30D these days is the 28-135 which gives you a pretty good range and is a pretty good lens. Not the best but if you look at the thread with the photos from it, you'll see it's pretty good. I like it a lot. I can't say I love it as much as my 85mm 1.8 but it gets more use because it's more versatile.

With that in mind, I would say it depends on if you want a wide angle, prime, what are you trying to do? The 28-135 covers a pretty broad range of use, IMO. I just ordered the 17-55mm because I wanted more for indoors. But like everyone has said, it really depends on what you want it for. That is the first thing you should decide.

If you shoot around a bit with your 28-135 you'll see what you feel you're missing and that should give you a better idea of what you want/need. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Couldn't agree more. I entered the world of Canon digital photography with a 30D with 17-40L and 70-200/4L. A very solid set-up.

I would beware of suggestions for lenses of 24-28mm at the wide end if you like to use a wide angle, as they are not very wide on a 30D.

Mark.

17-55MM EF-S IS and the 70-200MM f/4 EF L. These are about $1,650 total. Then start saving for a 10-22MM EF-S :)

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!

17-55mm 2.8 IS and the 70-200mm 2.8 IS

What I use? A 350D and 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 99% of the time.
(Well...I did just get the 70-200mm 2.8 IS, so lets see that 99% go down)
