I just bought myself a new 10-22 lens to complete my stuff (Canon EF50 f1.8, SIG 17-70 and Canon 70-300IS) and I was shocked to see the price of the optional sun lens hood (EW-83E), which retails for 60$ to 70$ Can dollars (+14% or so sales tax...) for a cheap piece of plastic that cost about 50 cents to produce at most.

I saw many counterfeit imitations on Ebay that retail for 15$ more or less depending on seller.

My question: does anyone has experince regarding those cheap imitations of EW-83E hoods? Are they ok ?, are thay solid enough? do they produce vignetting ?

If you have experience to share on this, please reply. I need some advice...

Thank you

I have the chinese version of the 10-22 hood and the 17-55 hood. Each cost me less than $15 shipped. The 10-22 is perfect, I am very pleased. The 17-55 is a bit thin, a bit rough, a bit loose, I wouldnt necessarily call it a successful purchase.

I got the 10-22 from jiakgong for $14 shipped. Its the same hood the 17-40L comes with. Many crop camera users do not use that hood for the 17-40 and you might be able to get one used for $20 if you ask around...

How do these hoods attach to the lenses?

For my 10-22 I got an OEM hood but for my 100mm macro I went generic (ebay). The generic hood was much cheaper and the only real difference is the inner material. OEM hoods have black velvet while the generic (at least mine) is just flat black plastic/paint on the inside.

does anyone know if a lens hood helps improve image sharpness? I am thinking about buying a hood for my Canon 70-300 mm IS USM lens.

Like you I was shocked to see the price of the petal hood for 10-22, so I went to eBay and got myself a China made "fake." It looks beautiful, fits perfect, and I'm very pleased that I got it for one third of the "original" price. The only thing that I can see missing in the Made-in-China version is "Canon."

And I have the Chinese 10-22 hood, and find it noticebly more finicky to mount on the bayonet mounting than a real Canon hood (17-55), in comparison.

No hood 'improves sharpness'! Hoods can only shield the lens from unwanted flare and contrast reducing light sources.
