With everyones help I decided on the following lenses for my 30D......

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Thanks again to everyone who posted with your advice, I am very grateful. Any suggestions on retail websites to purchase from. My local camera shop seemed high on price so I didn't purchase the lenses the other night. Thanks.

Greg

If you're in the US, www.pricegrabber.com (external link) is a good search engine for lens pricing. Of course, you could just go with B&H. Amazon.com and places like Buydig.com and beachcamera.com are also very good. Check www.resellerratings.com (external link) before buying from anywhere you're not too sure about. Nice lens choices, BTW.

I am new on the forum and have also a Canon EOS 30D , i would like to buy a new lense for it because the standard lense is not really usefull for making pics on a longer distance.

Can somebody give me some advise?
I see Greg choose a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM , Is this a good lense to make pics on long distance ?

Greetings,
Guy

Welcome to the forum Guy594. It always helps to start your own threads if you have any questions.

By the way, I love the 70-200/2.8 IS.

Depends what you want to shoot, in what conditions and what your budget is. 200mm isn't that long to me, but long enough for some things.

Guy- you may want a 70-300 or a 100-400, depending on what you will be shooting. 70-200 f/2.8 IS is extremely expensive, and may be too much investment for a starter. You may be better getting cheaper lenses over a wide range of focal lengths and then, when you've decided what you like shooting, spending big money in those focal lengths.

I'm still mulling over what I want to get for my two primary lenses. So far, the 70-200 2.8 IS seems to be a lock for one of them, but I'm still thinking over between the 17-55 IS and the 24-70. I'm leaning towards the 17-55, but I'm still on the fence. Enjoy the lenses, and definitely get some pictures up from that 24-70. :)

Some day, you will be mine 17-55IS.

Wow, big lenses

You do know they're both very expensive, don't you?

I just got done shooting a softball game. Used the 70-200 f/2.8IS L. At 180 feet out I can almost fill the viewfinder with the player. Also, used it with the 1/4X TC. Worked great with and without the TC. With the TC I can fill the viewfinder at 210 feet.

Thanks Bobthefish....I appreciate your input. Most everyone suggested that lens combo on another post I had.

BigandY,

Yeah, but I figured I might as well buy them now.
