I purchased a strobist kit and an extra umbrella, swivel and stand from mpex (if you don't already know what it is, check it out here: mpex.com/strobist) and had a go at a "studio" setup.
I made a simple frame out of PVC to hang some black paper from and placed the kids on some black fabric over a pillow to prop them up. One umbrella was placed at the right of the subject, above and pointing down at a 45 degree angle vertically, and the other umbrella was at the left of the subject even with their height directly facing them at a 45 degree angle horizontally.
The light source on the right was my 430EX at 1/4 power, and at left was a vivitar 285hv at 1/4 power - shot manually at ISO 100 - 1/200 and between f/8 and f/5.6 I beleive. Both flashes were triggered off of cactus 4-channel removes purchased through ebay.
Be kind to a first timer - here are my 3 favorites:

I converted the images to B/W in Lightroom - this is also my first go at a serious grayscale conversion.
thanks for any feedback you can offer
