My choice is between a Canon 24-70 F2.8 L and Canon 24-105 F4 L IS...

I currently have a Canon 28-135 IS USM lens which I bought early before realising that my 5D appreciated better glass.

I also have the 100-400 L IS F4.5-5.6 zoom and this I love (also the Canon 1.4x II TC I originally I had a 70-200 F4 non-IS which was sold to acquire the 100-400 zoom).

I would like to replace the 28-135 IS lens with one of the two choices above.

I have trawled for ages to try to decide which of these two would be the better.

I would really like the F2.8 despite the gap that would leave in my mearly two lens set up. I hanker after IQ above all and think the extra stop would be appreciated. I don't think that weight is an issue as I am used to carrying the 100-400.

I am not concerned about IS in this comparison either.

I need input especially as this relates to a 5D.

It will be used for indoor scenes, outdoor street scenes, nothing too far, however on the 5D would I really miss that 35mm extra reach??

I suspect that I might be writing my own brief for buying the 24-70 L but I would appreciate any input you guys/gals can give me to help me take everything into consideration.

I live in the UK and it is difficult to try kit out before you buy especially as I live in the boonies. I did actually manage to get some pix using my body with the 24-105 L IS but have been unsuccessful in finding a 24-70 F2.8 L to try, so I am hoping your input will help make the decision.

Many thanks in anticipation for your input.

Regards

Jamie

I'd jump on the 24-70. I just like that extra stop, especially if you're planning on using this indoors and in the streets. That extra reach of the 105 would be awesome, but the f/4 just isn't fast enough at times...

Having owned(past tense) one of the two you mentioned I would opt for the 24-70f/2.8 L

Chances are, you're not going to have a "measly" 2 lens set-up forever, regardless of whether you get the 24-70 or the 24-105. So, in my opinion that shouldn't necessarily affect your decision. That being said, even though I own a 20D, I find the 24-70 to be an excellent all-around lens. I believe that if I were in your situation, I'd choose the speed of the 24-70 over the length and IS of the 24-105, especially considering the superior high ISO capabilities of the 5D.

I, too, recommend the 24-70 f/2.8L.

I've been reading about way too many shortcomings of the 24-105 such as its being prone to flare and vignetting that I don't have even the slightest interest in that lens.

Even though I use my 24-70 on a 20D, it's the lens that's on my camera far more than the other two (16-35 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L IS) that I own.

Here's another vote for the 24-70. I have it and it is great--takes some of the best photos I've gotten. Beautiful. And, even though it is lots heavier than the 24-105, I'm keeping the 24-70 (a friend got the 24-105 recently, though, and loves the IS--and man is that thing lighter and less noticable than the 24-70).

Having a 24 70L f2.8 is like night and day compared to the 24 105L IS f4. :lol::lol:

24-70L must be in any serious photog's arsenal. You will never 'NEED' the 24-105L...but you will often 'NEED' the 24-70L.

Fast glass always. Tho I will say, I love having a lens with fast glass AND IS. Step up Canon and give us that lens with IS!

I've had the 24-105, which I think was an excellent lens. I have 'upgraded' to the 24-70. I love the extra stop and the image quality, plus the fact that it pairs up nicely with my 70-200 2.8 IS... ;)

These three things make me think 24-70 ALLLLLLLLLLL the way.

I've used both and have never looked back when switching to the 24-70. ever.

Many thanks to all for taking time out to help.....

That's 12 straight votes for the 24-70 F2.8 L !!!!!

It's an absolute no-brainer then !!

:)

So that's what I'll do!

wow, this is maybe the most biased (in a good way!) vote I've ever seen on the perennial 24-105 vs 24-70

way to go team!
