i ordered a sigma 17-70 last week, will be here tomorrow... now i just cant stop reading about the sigma 24-70 f/2.8. i cant find a comparison between the two lenses either. the 2.8 really grabs my attention because im crazy about DOF...lol

just looking for some opinions between the two?

Why not the new Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Macro?

What's your intended purpose for the lens?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

i'd take a 3x f2.8 zoom over a variable aperature "super zoom" any day :D .

I wouldn't be able to stand f/4.5 (or is it f/4?) at 70mm. The 24-70 is also built tougher and can be used on FF sensor or 35mm film without vignetting.

well, ive been reading through tons of similar posts. turns out i fat fingered my previous search...lol

anyhow, the 17-70 will be here tomorrow and i decided i dont want it. my money is all tied up in other things at the moment so i dont really have the extra loot to order the 24-70 until i return/sell the 17-70. hopefully i can work an exchange.

Like Tony said, what do you want to do? On a crop (assuming crop camera since you ordered the 17-70), 24 isnt wide enough for walk around. I'd skip 24-70 for a crop camera and just go for 17-50 if you want 2.8.

I have Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and keeping thinking about selling it, but its just so sharp. I use my 17-55 for general purpose and 85 for portraits.

good luck.

I thought about the 17-70, but ended up with the sigma 24-70 and I've been stoked about it. Love this lens.

I'm not sure what hoser intends to shoot, but 24mm is wide enough for about 90% of my shooting. Sure there are times I want something wider, but I've been quite happy with my 24-70.

In using my kit lens, I wanted a longer lens much more often than I used 18-23. Just my .02

my 17-70 is coming tomorrow too!

i think you're experiencing buyers remorse :P the lens is great, i could never do a 24-70 on a crop body as it is simply not wide enough for me.

but like what everybody else is saying, it all depends on what you shoot, and the style of your shooting. you will not be dissapointed with the 17-70

i dont shoot much landscape. mainly portrait stuff, motorcycles etc... im a sucker for shallow DOF and love bokeh. when i have my kit lens on most of my shooting is from the middle to the long end. very rare for me to shoot at 18mm...

i'll be shooting on a crop body btw, xti.

sounds like 24 at the wide end will be good if you return the 17-70.

I'm on an XTi as well.

Never had a 17-70, but I really didn't like the 24-70 2.8. Sold it after about 2 weeks. Horrible focusing (noisy and slow), bokeh was a bit muddy, colours were different from the rest of my lenses and it flared like a solar eclipse. It was pretty sharp, though.

Hope the 17-70 turns out to be better for you, even if it IS a variable aperture super-zoom.

Gary.

I've got the 24-70 f/2.8. Yes the autofocus is a little noisy but as I generally go manual for portrait and landscape "stuff" this doesn't matter. It's a cracking lense.

well... i slept on it and im still tossed...lol i ordered the 17-70 from 47th street photo and amazon shows them as having a 24-70 in stock but their website says its out of stock and you need to pre-order. that said, looks like id have to wait awhile possibly pay a 15% re-stocking fee or sell the 17-70 for a loss if i wanted to swap.
