i think the method i posted above, will help to ensure his ambient lighting of the fireplace is still visible.

otherwise, his shutter speed might be too fast to capture the ambient, and will only capture the fore-ground, fill-in part from the flash unit.

24-70, I would use a hood. at the very least it is another layer of protection for your front lens element. However if you are using an UWA lens such as the 10-22 or the 14mm the hood can cast a shadow/vignette if you are using the flash on camera.
