I was about 17 (many many years ago), when I had a Zenith 12XP. Brilliant fully manual camera (I think it just had a standard 50mm lens on it).

After a couple of years I upgraded to a Pentax (with AF and program modes), but it never ever gave me pictures as good as the old Zenith did.

For me, it was the ideal start into proper photography.

Miranda Sensorex, 16 or 17. That was after learning on a 4x5 Speed Graphic on the school paper. Everybody used flash bulbs except whichever lucky one snagged the bulky electronic flash first.

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

My dad's Pentax S1a at 16, with 3 Takumar lenses - 28mm, 50mm and 135mm.
That aside, "my" first SLR was at 18, Minolta 7000AF.
And it all went Pete Tong from there!

My first 35mm was a gift from my Aunt, it is a guess focus and exposure Realist. I have yet to take photos with it (yup stillhave it) than the ones she took and sent along with the camera. My first SLR was a Kowa bought in Okinawa, I only remember 2 things about it, NO interchangeable lens and it was the absolute noisest machine I ever used. I bought it mostly for a "throw it in an ammo puch when I returned to 'Nam.
My first real SLR was a Canon FX with a 50mm lens I bought in the PX in Phu Bai, 'Nam (11 miles from Hue City). Bought this along with a 35mm and 135mm lens, still have these Canons live forever.

Jack
