Hi,
A while back there was a thread that gave some recommendations for Dell monitors....I've searched but just can't find it! I need to buy a new monitor (my son wants mine!) but can't work out which ones are most suitable for photo editing......could some one point me in the right direction please???

Thanks

I've just bought a new pc from Dell, and opted for one of their 20" 'Ultra Sharp' monitors. I was advised that the max resolution and contrast ratios on monitors is a good guide, higher the better.

I have found that when I do a B&W conversion, the blacks on my monitor at home look grey and washed out on my (cheap) work monitor.

Not sure if that helps, but thought I'd give my tuppence worth.

These are the current Dell monitors that have S-IPS panels, which are what you want for a photo-editing LCD.

Dell 3007WFP (*) (widescreen) has a 30 inch 14 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM300W01) panel.

Dell 2007FP (*) has a 20 inch 16 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201U04) or an 8 ms (g2g) S-PVA (Samsung LTM201U1) panel. (be careful which one you get)

Dell 2007WFP (*) (widescreen) has a 20 inch 16 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201W01 eller LM201WE2) panel.

You can go here: http://www.flatpanels.dk/panels.php (external link)

Put S-IPS in the search field and find a monitor that is S-IPS

The 2407WFP is an S-PVA panel, which is not very highly regarded as a photo-editing panel.

I've got a 16ms 2007FP at work and it's pretty darn good for photo-editing.

You're welcome. I'd say just get the 2007FP and be done with it, but it's kind of a crap-shoot now on which panel you'll actually get, so I can't recommend it. As far as I know, all of the 2007WFP widescreens are S-IPS, so if you can be content with the smaller screen, you'll have a good editing monitor. Have you considered getting two 2007WFPs instead of one 2407WFP? It would be about the same price or cheaper, and dual-screen is very nice if you've got the space.

I've got the 2007FP and I al;ways assumed it was S-IPS because thats what it said in the specs when I was buying it - how can I tell which version it is?

Turn the monitor off, hold the "menu" & "+" keys down while turning the monitor back on. When the screen comes up, release the two buttons and press the "-" button. This brings up the service menu. If it says "V1B18" and "HN210" across the top, you've got an S-IPS panel. Another quicker, easier test is to look at it from the side. If there's not an ugly color-cast, you've most likely got an S-IPS panel.
