Although I'm not currently in the market, I am trying to watch the market to help gauge when I'm ready to jump in... but I rarely see them listed in sales forums.

So that and reading through the recent comparison thread got me wondering why that is and what you folks think the reason is. Is it so beloved by it's current group of owners that they don't want to let it go? It can't be because of poor re-sale value. Or are they all dead? Or was it a very small niche market to begin with and the odds of them coming up are small anyway?

I'm not particularly interested in the 5D and the price of the 1DSII is way over my head.

Anyway... I'll be watching and waiting.

I've sold a couple in the past while and they sat here doing nothing. Sure if they were for sale for a buck they'd move.

This camera is in the hands of people that REALLY like them. They won't let them go.

You'll find a lot more used Volkswagens on the market than Rolls Royce's :)

The few times I saw some for sale they were sold before I could blink my eyes.

What are the main differences between the 1Ds and the 5D? The 1Ds are not the same as the 1D mark II or III right?

Same body as the 1D, 1Ds MkII and 1D Mk.II in many ways. But it's full frame and has a max ISO of 1250. FPS is 3.5. Buffer is a little slow. Other minor bits are different.

1series cameras share many similar features and buttons.

I think once the AF issues are solved on the Mark III you will see more of them going up for sale, I think alot of people are holding on until they are certain the III is flawless :)

either way I will never be able to afford any of them lol :(

OK so I guess it's more of a case of lower volume in circulation to begin with. I can't imagine someone thinking of a 1DII/N as a Volkswagon to a 1DS as a Rolls Royce and I see plenty of 1DII/Ns out there for resale...so I don't buy into that theory.

I guess alot of people also didn't dump them when the affordable (relative to the 1DSII) 5D came out, thinking it wasn't a viable upgrade path for them.

I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes wide open when I'm ready.

The 1Ds has a very weak AA filter which leads to sharper OOC images. Also the big fat light buckets (vs. 1DS2) lead to nice color and some say a bit of a 3D effect. If you're willing to forego high ISO shooting - you essentially get a weatherproof, AF-of-the-Gods 5D with some say better IQ. I've spent some time with Ds2, Ds (now have) and D2 (now have) and the camera that has impressed me the most re: IQ has been the 1Ds.

Prices have also seemed to go up a bit of late - maybe because of D3 issues or (more likely) lack of supply. If the every intro a weatherproof 5D with a tweaked AF system, then you might see supply open up.

I think you seriously misinterpreted that analogy. Nobody called the mk2 or mk2n a Volkswagon...that was referring to the more common Canon bodies such as the Rebels and the XXD cameras. Even the original 1D was a Rolls by relative standards. Very few people that use 1 series bodies have any desire to give them up.

Oh no I didn't misinterpret it... I was trying to make the counterpoint that there are lots and lots of 1DII and 1DIIN's out there for re-sale though (comparatively).

I know it was meant to imply the Rebels or consumer models. I just found it was a bit of a blanket statement that when you take into account the numerous other 1 series available out there, doesn't make sense.

You could argue that the release of the 1DIII created alot of the action but the 1DS also has it's successor(s if you count the 5D).

I just wonder....if anyone can afford to upgrade from a 1Ds to a 1DsII or a 1DIII do they really need the money from selling a 1Ds? Folks get very attached to their cameras.

I also don't wonder if the 1Ds isn't somewhat collectable...correct me if I'm wrong, but it was the first ever FF dSLR ever made.
