Hey,

Bit of a problem, I've looked everywhere but i cannot find my camera charger! I'm going away on holiday on sunday and i'd rather not shell out for a new one because i know it will only turn up later. so... my question is, is it possible to make a charger from a standard DC charger? I have a variable DC charger and would like to know if (with a bit of handy soldering) i could modify it so it will fit my 350d batteries.

im not worried about the technicalities of it, i'd just like to know whether there could be problems with overloading the battery etc.

im also anticipating you all to tell me to stop being such a cheapskate and buy a new charger;) but if it can be done, let me know!

Thanks

Stu

Bad idea Stu. I have rigged up DC to various devices this way but I would never attempt to charge my batteries this way. There is a lot more going on than just supplying voltage and current.

no, do NOT charge lithium ion batteries like this unless you wish to explode the battery or catch it on fire.

I second that statement. All chargers for our camera batteries communicate with the battery and control what's going on so as to avoid destroying the battery.

You don't need to get a Canon charger, though. I'd suggest, for starters, that you check out Sterlingtek (www.sterlingtek.com (external link)).

The batteries have an internal temperture sensor which is monitored by the charger so that the battery doesn't overheat thereby shortening its life and/or exploding.

As said above do not try to charge a lithium ion batterys without the proper charger. Where i fly rc airplanes i have seen them blow up and caught on fire inside a van. Not a pretty sight. pos

Another voice to add to the 'don't do it'. Attempting to charge Li-Ion batteries without a proper charger is dangerous - whilst the packs should be protected, you could finish up with a very intense fire. Think about all the problems with Sony made laptop batteries (though that is a problem inside the pack).

You probably won't get an effective charge either without the correct charger, even if you get away without damage to the battery; it's much the same as trying to charge sealed lead acid batteries without the proper charger.

You don't have to buy a Canon charger; there are third party alternatives that are cheaper.
