okay, I had 350D for 1 year. It wasn't my starting point exactly, I owned several film SLRs before. I found 350D to be a very good performer, no significant problems except for size. for a kid its awesome. Its also pretty easy to navigate and learn shooting.

RECOMMENDED!

I had the 300D, and that was a very good starter camera. My only complaints I had with it were the lack of AI servo and poor high ISo performance. The 350 corrected both of those complaints. The 350 is also smaller and lighter than 300D/30D, which would be perfect for a 14 year old. My 16 yr old nephew has one, and he loves it.

There's a thread on this forum with examples of images shot with 350Ds but an important factor to consider is the lens you're going to put on it.

Good camera + bad lens = bad images.

Great camera for a kid or an adult as an intro to DSLR's. Used correctly this camera can produce some great results.

I had the 350D for about a year before stepping up to a 5D for the full frame and a few other features. The 350D is now my backup. It is certainly, no definitely, a place to start for a 14 year old, particularly if he is serious about photography. It will be a good camera to learn and practice with and should give him years of satisfaction, until he decides he wants something better. The point made (above) about the lens is also something to note. HTH

Cheers,

WesternGuy

I have had 3 XTs, so hopefully my opinion with all the others matter, yes, it would be a fine camera for a 14 year old. I almost gave my daughter one of these, and but ended up getting her an S3 IS instead, more for selfish reasons than anything. I wanted a point and shoot that would meet my expectations for trips to amusement parks, etc, and figured she would use it most of the time, and I could use when warranted.

350D - why not? Much better than many entry-level film SLRs. I enjoy using my XT quite a bit. Only problem is he's going to want to borrow your L lenses. ;)
