Looking for a monopod for my 300D that I can travel/hike with (carry on my LowePro mini trekker). I have a Manfrotto tripod, but need something light and quick for steadiness. I have not used a monopod before so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Alan

I have been eyeing up a monopod myself. I have a 10d and was looking at the bogen/manfrotto 681b at B&H for around $46. I was thinking about a carbon fiber one, but they are so lite to start with....

Hey guys ! This issue was discussed just about couple of weeks ago - here.
BTW, I recomend the monopod I got in the end - light, high enough for me and very sturdy. Just don't forget the ball head - it's very convenient !

Best wishes,
Oleg.

Alan,
This is my solution. Hope it helps.

Gitzo GIG1564
G-1564 Mk2 Studex Monopod - Supports 17.64 lb (8.00 kg). Retails for $116.00.

I also use a Manfrotto Quick Release plate with the monopod. I do not need a ball head. I use the monopod with my 70-200 2.8 IS lens. Since the lens has a tripod collar, I attach the QR Plate to the tripod collar . If I want to change the orientation of the camera to vertical, I loosen the collar and twist the camera to the vertical position, and tighten. I have a 1D MkII with this heavy lens, so the weight rating had to be high.

I have had good results with this set up so far. It is sturdy, steady and mobile. I used this set up to shoot a bike race last weekend. Here is the results.

Get a local camping supply store to make up an aluminum tent pole about 3" shorter than your eye height. 5 or 6 sections works well to collapse into a small package, weight is less than 3 oz.

These are very stiff in the vertical direction, where the most camera shake appears. Don't worry about a ball head or threaded mount, just rest the camera on the end of the monopod.
